In his lecture, Formatting Gaia + Technological Symbiosis, Patrick will target in on the inspirations that led to his photographic portfolio Formatting Gaia. Along with a sharing of the artwork, Patrick will highlight integrated and emerging technologies that point to a future singularity.
Patrick Millard's             work continually             visits upon scientific             and technological             themes that he             sees as paramount             to an understanding             of the future             conditions of             vision, environment             and the human             experience. Topics             such as technological             embodiment, virtual             and augmented             realities, ecotechnology,             biotechnologies,             or nanotechnology             are some of the             reappearing issues             that appear in           his artwork.

On May 14-15 2011, Humanity+ International is partnering with Parsons The New School for Design in New York City to produce Transhumanism Meets Design, a conference exploring emerging technology, transdisciplinary design, culture and media theory, and biotech.

Patrick Millard is an artist, curator, and educator that works  with ideas in an overlapping artistic and scientific arena.  His work  speaks directly to a changing environment and a need for symbiotic  relationship between ecology and technology.  Working in photography,  sound, and new media, Millard has developed several portfolios dealing  with embodiment, cryonics, virtual and augmented reality, ecotechnics,  nanotechnology, and robotics. Millard received his MFA in photography  from the Savannah College of Art and Design and currently holds the  position of Assistant Professor of Photography at Point Park University  in Pittsburgh, PA.

| Navigating the Post-Photographic Era This seminar is taught from Pittsburgh, PA Language: English Workshop meets online Sunday Afternoons at 3pm EST (noon PST, 3pm EST, 9 pm CET). The world of photography in the digital world of 21st century innovation is in a state of continual flux. Emerging technologies that allow photographic imagery without the use of a traditional camera, lens, or subject matter are beginning to have a presence in our mainstream culture. In this seminar we'll explore new technologies that are being unveiled through in seminar discussions,, dialogs, and practice. The history of digital imaging in the post-photographic world will be outlined before embarking upon the use of web cams, cell phones, and virtual worlds for our hands-on image making assignments. *Students should have access to a computer and photo editing software (preferably, but not necessarily, Adobe Photoshop), Second Life, Mozilla Firefox and Skype. ** This seminar begins with an introduction meeting on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at noon PM EST (3 pm EST, 9 pm CET), Online seminar meetings are 90 min. in length with interaction during the week.
