Ancient Forest of the East: Photography by Jarrid Spicer

It is estimated that when European settlers first came to the New World, forest covered over forty-percent of the land that is now the continental United States. Today, less then one-quarter of one-percent of that ancient forest is left. Jarrid Spicer’s photographic images are a celebration of that original forest. The artist’s intent in presenting images of these last vestiges of what was once a vast, ancient forest, is not only didactic: it is also to communicate the feeling one has when standing alone amidst something so ancient, beautiful, strong--and fragile.

The exhibit will be presented at both desotorow venues: Desotorow Gallery and TruSpace- a desotorow gallery. On Friday, November 21 at 6:30pm, Jarrid Spicer will lead an artist lecture in TruSpace Gallery, discussing his work with the public. The lecture will be followed by an opening reception at 7pm.

Desotorow Gallery is located in Savannah’s Starland Arts District at 2427 De Soto Avenue. Desotorow’s second venue, TruSpace- a desotorow gallery, is located at 2423 De Soto Avenue. For more information, please email info@desotorow.org, or visit the gallery’s website www.desotorow.org.

Thank You

I would like to thank the photography department for supporting the Photojournalism, Media, and Culture show held at DeSoto Row Gallery. Thanks also to the organization and support of the DeSoto Row staff and to all that joined the festivities and made it a truly wonderful event for the students involved. I cannot begin to express how proud and thrilled I am about the experience of putting the show together. For several of the students it was their first show. At least three students sold images. Overall it was a wonderful opportunity to share in their excitement. These students did a terrific job hanging this show of 50 prints in 1.5 hours. They were cooperative, working well as a team. It was a wonderful experience and I thank the students for all their effort and their outstanding enthusiasm and spirit. Rebecca

Students attended and photographed events ranging from a picnic on Tybee Island, to the Presidential Debate held in Nashville, and a rally held in Orlando with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The photographs will show a comprehensive look at an exciting campaign season. An opening reception will be held on Friday, November 14th at 7pm.

FIRST FRIDAY at Desotorow Gallery and TruSpace- a desotorow gallery

Desotorow and TruSpace will each be displaying MFA Photography Thesis Shows on Friday, November 7th. The artists, Bevin Valentine in Desotorow Gallery, and Kate Lewis in TruSpace Gallery will be hosting opening receptions Friday evening, 7-10pm. These First Friday shows will be held in conjunction with Starland’s First Friday events including Desotorow’s HOLIDAY Junk in da Trunk Craft Show, Back in the Day Bakery’s Cupcake Happy Hour, and Starland Café’s photo exhibit opening reception.

Kate Lewis’ exhibit, Mise-en-Scéne, explores the perception of identity as formed through the psychological impact of individual life experience. Through the signifiers of visual language and photography, Mise-en-Scéne questions the validity of one’s assumed identity received and projected, while suggesting that identity encompasses a multifaceted transient existence. Lewis’ carbon-pigment print photographs were taken using a 4x5 camera. One exposure represents the artist clothed, while the next exposure represents the artist naked attempting to align her body in the same position. The exhibition will run November 7-12 in TruSpace Gallery, 2423 De Soto Ave, Savannah, GA.

Bevin Valentine’s exhibit, in Desotorow Gallery, is entitled Who Knows How to Make Love Stay. Valentine’s photographs are a collection of self-portraits that reference literary heroines in an exploration of the portrayal of romantic love throughout the history of literature. On Friday, November 7 at 6:30pm, Bevin Valentine will lead an artist lecture in Desotorow Gallery, discussing her work with the community. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by an opening reception at 7pm.
