Summer Photography and Imaging Intern—Digital Collections and Services


(Non-union, paid internship position)

Requirements: The individual applying for this internship should be a photography major or have significant training and experience in photography, with a strong interest in art and museums. S/he should understand and be able to use advanced features on a digital SLR camera (provided), have some experience scanning, and have excellent PhotoShop skills. In addition, s/he should be well organized and detail-oriented. Experience using databases is helpful.

Responsibilities: The Summer Photography and Imaging Intern will have two projects: 1) Serve as a candid photographer, attending Museum events and activities, shooting and editing images for Museum publication and web use; 2) Work on scanning and editing images of works of art from the negatives collection, to be added to the Museum's collections on our website and Luna image repository. The first project will give the intern the opportunity to experience the challenges of composing shots on the fly, dealing with difficult lighting conditions, obtaining releases from parents, and editing and selecting usable images from the many obtained during a shoot. The second project will introduce the student to the detailed work of creating scans following standard specifications and working in a production environment. The Museum will obtain quality images for two important purposes: use on the website and in future publications, and use as archival documentation of the Museum's collections and activities. In addition, the intern will tag images on the Museum website as part of our posse. The intern also serves as the official photographer of the ARTSIntern program, shooting ARTSIntern events over the course of the summer.

Work schedule: Nine weeks, beginning the second week of June 2013. Five days per week, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. One of those days will be spent on ARTSIntern field trips. Occasional weekend and evening work may be required to shoot events, substituting for time during the workweek.

Compensation: This internship is a paid position through the ARTSIntern program of Studio in a School, with total compensation of $3,300. Intern will be issued a Brooklyn Museum ID for the duration of the internship, which provides a discount in the Museum Shop and Café, as well as one free admission to most art museums throughout the country.
