The Art and Design of Teaching Art and Design

TADtad  (The Art and Design of teaching art and design)
Date: October 19
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
Place: SCAD Museum of Art, SCAD Theater
TOPIC: Bringing Sustainability to the Classroom
Sustainability is increasingly informing the ways in which we live our lives. It is being embraced by designers across the planet, yet, for others it is an afterthought in the design process, an additional component added to advertise “green” benefits, or not considered at all.   Presenters will share their ideas on how to engage students to consider options that make positive impacts on our environment.

TITLE: Beyond Sustainability
By: Prof. Sam Olin, RA, LEED AP, Professor of Architecture
We are educating our students to be leaders and creative problem solvers in the fast approaching future of sustainability by necessity. Students at all levels of study need to develop the integration and personalization of sustainable practices in design, incorporating sustainability as part of a responsible design solution as opposed to a separate condition or afterthought. The talk will culminate in examples of student architectural projects approached from this sustainable mindset.

TITLE: Words + Deeds: What Does Sustainability Mean…to Your Neighbor?
BY: Scott Boylston, Program Coordinator, Design for Sustainability
There is a pervasive sense that sustainability is more about compromise, and less about opportunity. Sustainability in the classroom all too often focuses on the sacrifices a client or audience has to make and not on the meaningful and easily accessible ways in which it can be implemented. This talk will focus on the triple bottom line of sustainability: people, planet, and profit.

TITLE: The First Rule of Teaching Sustainability is: Do Not Talk About Sustainability
BY: Annemarie Spitz, MA Candidate, Design for Sustainability
Annemarie's Final Project in Design for Sustainability considers how to incorporate sustainable design thinking, and more broadly positive impacts, into more designers' work. It focuses on the undergraduate student experience as a way to reach and shape designers as they are forming their personal and professional priorities. This lecture will present results of the research phase, where Annemarie explored how students learn what it means to be a designer and how to apply these expectations to their work.
