Profiles of Poverty Exhibit Call for Photography

Profiles of Poverty Exhibit Call for Photography
·       Considerations: The exhibition is open to photographers in Savannah. Photographers working in all mediums and styles are invited to participate. Hosted by St. Vincent de Paul Georgia and Step Up Savannah, this exhibit seeks to capture images of the lives and neighborhoods of Savannah’s low-income working families and those in poverty.

With a poverty rate of 26%, the experiences of families living in Savannah’s poorest neighborhoods are diverse, unique and complex. Therefore, photographers are encouraged to spend time with an individual, family or in a neighborhood to submit meaningful and honest portraits. Each submission should include an accompanying documentary – either recorded or written. The purpose of this call for photography is to reveal the faces and stories of the one in four individuals working daily to make ends meet in a city with tremendous potential. Submissions should aim to give a voice to the 26%.

Submitted images may appear on the St. Vincent de Paul Georgia and Step Up Savannah webpage and continue as an online exhibition that extends beyond the event. SVdP Georgia and Step Up Savannah reserves the right to use submitted images to promote the exhibit and in future marketing materials. Images selected for display will acknowledge the photographer and where and when the photo was taken.

Photography selected by our panel of qualified judges will be displayed at a local studio throughout the month of February. Reception dates will be announced at a later time.

·       Requirements: Applicants may submit a portfolio of a maximum of 10 high-res photos with an image inventory sheet listing the file name, title, and size of printed photograph. Please also include the name of the person featured in the image, the location of each photograph, and provide a brief statement with context for each photo.  Include your contact information in the body of your message.

·       Submission details: Submissions will be accepted through January 30, 2016. Save images to JPEG format, and email entries to mwinkler@svdpgeorgia.org.
·     Name files:  firstname_lastname1.jpg, firstname_lastname2.jpg, etc. For entries of more than five photos (2 MB or less each), please send photos via a file sharing service (e.g. Dropbox, Web Cargo).

• Evaluation Criteria: Photos will be individually evaluated and assessed based on conceptual and technical expertise, emotional impact, memorability, unique perspective and relevance to poverty in Savannah

The purpose of the Profiles of Poverty photography exhibit is to bring a human face and new perspectives to the problem of poverty in our communities. Below is a list of some examples of subject matter that would fit well into the exhibit.
