Local Reclamation Project and Documentary Opportunities

The City of Savannah is demolishing 210 homes in East Savannah to make way for a mixed income, 'green' development. The houses to be taken down were built during WWII to house shipbuilders, and have fallen into a state of disrepair. Professor Scott Boylston (Graphic Design) is leading a city-wide effort to reclaim as much material as possible from this site before it is landfilled. The project intends to get a broad representation of Savannah involved in 'harvesting' these materials. They also have organizations like the Girl Scouts of America and a public Montessori school in the county who will be moving full buildings and renovating them for bungalows, science centers and class rooms.

Photographers are needed to shoot not only the demolition, reclamation and restoration process for the numerous projects that will result from this, but the creation of furniture, architecture, sculpture, etc. that will result from the reclamation process. If all goes well, there will be a large symposium and gallery show that presents all the photography, film and decorative arts that result.

The project has already garnered a front-page article in the Savannah Morning News. (http://savannahnow.com/news/2009-11-10/recyclers-harvest-building-materials-strathmore-estates)
