Monday, September 21 Lecture
Artist John Richardson will speak tonight at 5:15 in Alexander Hall Auditorium
Professor Richardson earned his graduate degrees in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (MFA 1996, MA 1994) and his undergraduate degree from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma WA (BA with honors, 1993). He currently teaches at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where he is the Chair of the department. He has also served the department in the roles of sculpture area coordinator, Interim Chair, Associate Chair, and Graduate Officer. Prior to teaching at Wayne State, he taught at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Through his sculpture, Prof. Richardson investigates a notion of mind/body duality where a created object begins as an extension of the maker and then emerges as a separate entity that may or may not be interdependent. He works in a variety of media including cast and welded metals, rubber, glass, wood, plastic, and stone. He has participated in over 50 national, group exhibitions and held many one-person exhibitions – including an exhibition at the South Bend Museum of Art (2007). In March 2012, he had a one-person exhibition at the University of Minnesota-Morris. In the summer of 2012 he exhibited sculpture in a group exhibition at Causey Contemporary Gallery (NYC) and later in the fall at a one-person exhibition at Finlandia University. His award winning work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Michigan Legacy Art Park (Ontonagon, 2002); Xiadu Park, Yanqing, China (Anastomatic Lines, 2001); the Open Air Museum of Steel Sculpture, Coalbrookdale, England (Articulated Lapse, 2003) and the Lumsden School, Lumsden, Scotland (Time Boundary, 2004).

We're pleased to offer the $1000 Working Artist
Photography Award, a monthly one-time art purchase award dedicated
solely to photography and photo-based artwork.
The Working Artist
Photography Award is available to all domestic and international
photographers and photo-based artists working in all traditional and
non-traditional photography formats, genres and styles. Work accepted
for review includes but is not limited to film, digital photography,
digitally manipulated photography, glitch, straight and abstract
photography, landscape, still life, fashion, documentary, street, black
and white, color, and all methods concerning the finished photographic
print.
If selected as our winner, we ask that the award recipient
be willing to exchange one of their finished larger prints or a smaller
photographic series for inclusion into our collection, in return for
our award. Please send us your best work for review. Work considered by
the artist as of equal value, and available for acquisition can be
negotiated upon receipt of the award. We do pay the artist's shipping
costs.
If you are interested in being considered for our award, please send us either 5 digital images of recent work, (total mail size no larger than 2 MB please),
or a link to a web page, via email. No written proposals or CV's are
required unless the artist would like to include them. Instead, please
simply include in the body of your email current contact information,
and send to: photographyaward@workingartist.org. There is no application form.
There is an application review fee of $25.00, payable here:
which helps offset the costs of this effort to fund meaningful work by serious artists. Award recipients agree by submitting their completed application to limited use of their images or other representation of their artwork and general information to be featured on this site and corresponding promotional media. All rights will be retained by the artists.

photographs made back in the analog-only era. To honor that work, and
to help ensure that it doesn’t fade into obscurity, we’ve created this
contest for photographs made prior to 1980. Do you have an archive of

Smartphone Photography: The smartphone has revolutionized the nature and potential of photographic capture and has opened up expressive possibilities to billions of people the world over. But since quantity does not necessarily equate to quality, we’ve created this contest to help stimulate your smartphone photo creativity. With more megapixels and a growing array of apps, filters and features, today’s smartphone camera is quickly becoming a serious fine art tool. Show us what you can do with your smartphone camera.
Entry Specifications: Open to black-and-white smartphone and tablet images, original monochrome capture or converted from color.
Alternative Printing Processes: Despite having been pioneered decades ago, alternative printing processes — the photogram (ca. early 1800s), daguerreotype (introduced in 1839), tintype (1853), collodion (ca. 1850), Mordançage (ca. 1960s) and others — are still widely practiced. In fact, there are now more daguerreotypists than at any time since the late 1850s. The 21st century has witnessed increased popularity among these and other organic printing methods, as photographers worldwide gravitate to the unique, unpredictable and fascinating print characteristics achievable through these time-honored techniques. Our contest provides the perfect opportunity to show off your darkroom skill and creative vision.

Submit your best pinhole/plastic camera photo and share your vision with the world.

The SPE Student Awards for Innovations in Imaging
The SPE Student Awards for Innovations in Imaging
Awards are given annually to ten SPE student members to offset the cost of attending SPE's national conference based on merits of submitted portfolios.
Student award recipients receive a $550 travel stipend to attend the national conference, a conference fee waiver, and one-year membership to SPE.

Jon Feinstein is the Co-Founder of Humble Arts Foundation and Strategic Partnerships Manager at Shutterstock. Humble Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to promoting and supporting new photography and dedicated to the artistic and professional development of those who practice the medium. Jon has curated numerous exhibitions, including Radical Color at Newspace Center for Photography, Portland, OR; Another New York for Art-Bridge at The Barclays Arena, Brooklyn, NY; the internet-acclaimed New Cats in Art Photography; Aneta Bartos’ ‘Boys’ at the Carlton Arms Hotel, New York City; and 31 Women in Art Photography at Hasted Kraeutler, New York City. His various projects have been covered by The New York Times, BBC, Slate, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, American Photo, Art Info, and FoxNews; and his writing has appeared in Time, Daylight, GOOD, and Whitewall Magazines. Selection CriteriaAward recipients will be selected by the juror on the basis of exceptional, distinctive talent as evidenced by the strength of their submitted portfolios. JuryingThere are two (2) rounds of evaluation. Winners will be notified via phone immediately following the decision of the juror. Non-selected photographers will be notified by email shortly thereafter. Decision of the juror are final and binding. |
What to Enter
The submission you are entering is comprised of three individual items:- A one-page Artist’s Statement in PDF format
- Your biography or CV in PDF format
- Your work sample
Submitted work may not have been previously exhibited at Silver Eye or in the Greater Pittsburgh region.
For the best image quality, image files must be no larger than 1,500 pixels wide, and saved as a .JPG size 8.
