Exhibition Opportunity at Popular Local Business

Desotorow has partnered with New South Cafe to offer artists the chance to display their work in six-week-long exhibitions at the trendy, local restaurant. Desotorow is currently inviting artists to submit digital portfolios for review. Submit now, as the gallery hopes to complete a schedule for the next twelve months.

What did YOU do on summer vacation?

The academic year can be a stressful time filled with back-to-back projects and deadlines. So what happens when the year winds down and everyone goes on vacation? What kind of work gets created outside of the classroom curriculum? We want to know! Desotorow is hosting a juried exhibition featuring work done by student artists on their summer break.

Friday Night: "Girls in Dresses"

SCAD photography students, Bevin Valentine, Lisa O’Quinn, and Michelle Repici will exhibit their newest work September 19-24 at Desotorow Gallery. The exhibit, Girls in Dresses, will open with an artist reception on Friday, September 19, at 7pm.

Annapolis Group Show Opportunity

This from recent MFA grad, Katie Wright:

WHAT: Group show in a commercial space in a cute/artsy part of Annapolis, MD

WHEN: Opening on Friday, October 10th

WHAT TO SUBMIT: Something GOOD (does not necessarily have to relate to the notion of being a "starving artist")! Keep in mind that there will be some deep pocketed Annapolitans in attendance. It does not have to be photography. There will even be someone doing a rather cheeky reading/performance (on being a starving artist).

HOW/WHEN TO SUBMIT: Email me up to 5 (reasonable sized!) jpgs NO LATER THAN next TUESDAY (September 16th). Please provide the title, size, medium, selling price (the gallery will be taking 10% of whatever is sold). I will email you word of the pieces I have selected, and provide you with a shipping address. I will need to receive that work no later than Friday, October 3rd.

THE DAMAGE: No more than $20-I will let you know a more exact price after I have taken a head count of the participants.

THE GRANT: There will be a small grant given to one lucky participant...details of this to follow.

Tom Fischer Book Launch!

Professor and SCAD Chief Academic Officer, Tom Fischer, will host a book launch on Wednesday, September 24, from 6 to 7pm at the River Club. Paradise/Paradox is a project that includes landscape images and essays related to the complex and problematic relationship between humans and their environment.

Tom has generously offered to donate proceeds from any book sales to the department.

Atlanta Celebrates Photography - Christopher Bucklow Lecture

British artist, Christopher Bucklow will speak about his work on Thursday, September 11th at 7pm at The Rich Theater, Woodruff Arts Center (Atlanta). An exhibition of his work opens Friday, September 12th at Jackson Fine Art.

Avenue to Row: Desotorow Gallery opens second arts venue down the street

SAVANNAH, August 20, 2008: Desotorow Gallery has acquired an additional venue to host twice as many arts and educational events in the Starland District. In September, Desotorow will set up shop in 2423 De Soto Avenue, formerly TruSpace Gallery owned and operated by photographer Robert Wilson. As Wilson’s gallery shared many of Desotorow’s values, Desotorow wishes to carry on TruSpace’s legacy, while providing additional programming consistent with Desotorow’s mission. The new venue will be called TruSpace- a desotorow gallery.

Desotorow’s staff is thrilled that the second space will provide greater opportunity to offer the community more exhibits, film screenings, artist lectures, and other career-building and educational programs. The staff is eager to revitalize Starland’s art district by opening another gallery along De Soto Avenue, which will add to the thriving creative energy already generated from other businesses in the area.

Similar to its first space, Desotorow will staff the second venue with volunteers, who will book the shows, manage the gallery and events, and ultimately provide the Savannah community with a network of passionate artists and arts professionals.
