Mary Virginia Swanson Lecture Thursday

Mary Virginia Swanson is an author, educator and consultant who helps artists find the strengths in their work, identify appreciative audiences and present their work in an informed, professional manner. Her seminars and lectures on marketing opportunities have proven to aid photographers in moving their careers to the next level. Swanson is a frequent presenter and portfolio reviewer at such events as PhotoPlus Expo, FotoFest, FotoWeek DC and the Palm Springs Photography Festival, among many additional industry gatherings. Photograph Magazine’s “In Profile” column highlighted Swanson’s diverse career in the July/August 2011 issue.

Swanson maintains a popular blog about opportunities for photographers called Marketing Photos and coauthored Publish Your Photography Book with Darius Himes (Princeton Architectural Press, 2011).  Her forthcoming title Finding Your Audience: An Introduction to Marketing Your Photographs will be released in 2013.

Fashion and lifestyle blogger, Alyssa Mastrianni of Darcy Dearest, is seeking a photographer interested in fashion photography with the ability to photograph 4-5 days per week. Photographer will take pictures of personal style, DIYs, etc.

Juror Karen Haas, Lane Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, will select work by eight contemporary photographers that will comprise the eighteenth iteration of the PRC's highly regarded annual juried exhibition. 
 
Submissions Open: Monday, February 11, 2013  
Submissions Due: Sunday, March 3, 2013, 11:59 pm EST
Exhibition Dates: June 4 - July 27, 2013


 
Awards 
  • The juror will select eight photographers for the gallery exhibition at the PRC this summer.
  • The juror also will select one of these artists for the Best of Show Award.  
  • The PRC will select two winners of the Staff Picks Award. One will be featured in the PRC's journal, Loupe, and the other will be included in NEO, our monthly online showcase of work by regional members.   
Prizes

Exposure 2013 Juror
For the last decade Karen Haas has served as the Lane Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where she is responsible for a large collection of photographs by American modernists such as Charles Sheeler, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and Imogen Cunningham. The Lane Collection, which has recently been given to the Museum, numbers more than 6,000 prints and ranges across the entire history of western photography from William Henry Fox Talbot to the Starn twins. Before coming to the MFA, Haas held various curatorial positions in Boston-area museums and private collections, including the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Boston University Art Gallery, and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover. She holds a BA in Art History from Connecticut College; received her MA in the History of Photography at Boston University; and taught the history of photography at both Boston University and Boston College.

Squire Fox graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in photography. He moved to NYC in 1993, assisting Bruce Weber, George Holz, Gilles Bensimon, and Mary Ellen Mark. Fox has developed an impressive client base that includes Vanity Fair, UK Condé Nast Traveller, Travel & Leisure, Target, Converse, Johnston & Murphy, Garden & Gun, and W. W. Norton & Company, recently adding motion to his award winning portfolio.  Fox is represented by Tricia Joyce, and travels between NYC and the surf in Charleston.

Rebekah Jacob is an expert in the diverse art and photography of the American South. Maggie Kennedy is the photography director of Garden & Gun magazine. Since the premiere issue in 2007, she has helped shape the visual identity of the G&G brand. Kennedy previously worked as a creative director and producer of commercial photography in San Francisco and New York. Her work has been recognized with a National Magazine Award in General Excellence by the American Society of Magazine Editors in 2011 and by the Society of Publication Designers and Photo District News. gardenandgun.com

Mark Sloan has been the director and senior curator of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston since 1994.  He has curated dozens of exhibitions featuring contemporary photographers. His own photographic works have been exhibited and published internationally. Sloan coauthored the book Rarest of the Rare: Stories Behind the Treasures at the Harvard Museum of Natural History with Nancy Pick in 2004, and has authored several books on historical photographic archives.  halsey.cofc.edu

Jack Whitten will discuss the formal issues of his works in the SCAD Museum of Art exhibition, “Erasures,” which explores the artist’s intentional elimination of art historical references present in his earlier paintings. He will also explore the psychological and political implications that surface during the act of making a painting, and how his approach is a holistic endeavor that encompasses both plasticity and sensibility as a part of his studio practice.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
