In-Person Learning

Lori Vrba and Tobia Makover lead this workshop with big ideas for expanding how we consider and pursue a viable career in the photographic arts. Examine the radical shift from the traditional notions of fine art success to what is now a game-changing movement in the exhibition, curatorial, and marketing arenas.

Vrba and Makover walk you through an avant-garde world of exhibition, production, and curation and take a deep dive into the current and liberating swings in the business of art with topics of the marketplace, social media, and branding.

Re-imagine your creative life by exploring alternative exhibition venues, connections to your local and global community, and innovative business thinking for the art marketplace. If you’ve got a fire in your belly and the fierce spirit to be audacious in today’s art world, this course is for you.

Participants are encouraged to bring portfolios for one-on-one and group brainstorming for the how, what, where, and why we are the paradigm shift in the visual arts scene.

Only the brave need apply.

LensCulture Art Photography Awards 2023

Announcing 40 New Discoveries in Art Photography
We are honored to announce 40 remarkable artists (from 20 countries on five continents) as the winners, finalists and jurors’ picks of the LensCulture Art Photography Awards 2023.
The work you will discover here is bold and varied. Some is stripped down to the basics of black-and-white prints made in a makeshift darkroom during wartime. Others interrogate the instability of photographic materials as a metaphor for the slipperiness of human memory. Among these 40 award-winning works, challenging topics are treated in many different ways: mutilated negatives and prints, poetic metaphors, colossal collages, straightforward documentary, staged portraiture, and colorful in-your-face humor. The range of creative and technical approaches is impressive and exhilarating.
We hope you will find delight and inspiration in many of this year’s discoveries.

“It was a pleasure to be introduced to so many new artists with strong bodies of work. The quality of the works presented set the bar so high that it was difficult to narrow the field to find works that left a mark. Congratulations to everyone who submitted.”
— Crista Dix, Executive Director, Griffin Museum

“It was a pleasure to judge the LensCulture award this year. Art photography can be a very loose term to define but it allows for experimentation and creativity like no other genre in the medium. As an editor, the process is a great way to connect with new photographers and their projects, some of whom we may well end up commissioning in the future.”
— Izabela Radwanska Zhang, Editorial Director, British Journal of Photography

Laney Contemporary Two Photography Exhibitions

 Opening Friday, Feb. 10 6-8pm

Christy Bush

Artist Talk / Book Signing: February 11, 11:30 - 1pm

Laney Contemporary is pleased to present a selection of photographs by Christy Bush, organized by Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta. "A rebellious punk rock kid from Atlanta, Bush moved to Athens, GA in the early '90s and fell in with a well-known group of creatives and musicians.” The South serves as a backdrop for the majority of Bush’s work and a deep source of inspiration. Her photographs, spanning decades, traverse photographic genres with ease, serving as a process of remembering through intimate connection with her subjects and surroundings. Bush employs a direct style of portraiture that allows her to limn her memories and explore her personal relationships and past experiences through her subject matter. Full press release HERE

Tabitha Soran

Laney Contemporary is pleased to present Relief, a selection of works by California-based artist Tabitha Soren, organized by Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta. A visual artist in different domains for over twenty-five years, Soren has long explored the intersection of psychology, culture, politics, and the body. A former reporter for MTV News, ABC News, and NBC News, Soren begins each new series using the methodical investigative tools she used during her time in journalism. Books, research studies, and statistics lay a necessary analytical foundation for the visual ideas she communicates. These data points then merge with her experiences growing up in a military family, spending her youth moving around the world and adjusting to cultural differences, social structures, and visual cues that came with each relocation. A through-line connects the three bodies of work, evoking the universal paranoia and contemplation of our historical moment. Full press release HERE

Lee.
