Young Harris College and the Campus Gate Art Gallery are excited to announce a call for entries for a new art experience that will be traveling the southeastern United States next year. Snap it. Send it. Win it. is a mobile phone photography contest open to both aspiring and professional artists as well as anyone who enjoys taking cool pictures on their phones!
An article in National Geographic Magazine recently stated that 50 billion photos were taken with camera phones in the year 2000 and estimate that 150 billion will be taken by the year 2015—a number that will outweigh that of digital cameras. As photography is transferred into the portable medium of cell phones, Young Harris College wants to capture and experience this growing art form by offering a competition open to anyone who can take a photograph with a mobile phone.
The world of art is rapidly changing with the constantly advancing technology of smart phones, computers, projectors and other electronics. The realm of mobile phone “apps” are constantly growing and changing, and artists are now carrying cameras in their back pocket on a daily basis. We want to showcase this new realm of photographic art and show that mobile phones can produce groundbreaking images. Through this competition, we will create a body of work that shows what these handheld devices can do. By taking these images out of the digital world of social media and displaying them to audiences in the form of prints, we aim to prove that this medium is a true art form—and it’s not going away any time soon.
The competition will include five categories for photographers to choose from: architecture, people, rhythm, “no app” (meaning no editing and/or manipulation) and an open category. Prizes will be awarded for each category along with an overall grand prize. After all submissions are received, a panel will narrow the pool to approximately 100 images for each category. These final 500 images will be converted to 5”x5” prints and exhibited in the CGAG, where a panel of jurors will evaluate the work and award prizes. After the show closes at the CGAG in January 2013, the images will continue to travel and be exhibited in multiple galleries throughout the southeastern U.S. (dates and locations to be announced soon).
