Alum Brittany Hicken (and it all started with 1 assignment in Photo 113)

full article here: https://www.dodho.com/interview-with-brittany-hicken/

Brittany Hicken is not merely a photographer but also an indefatigable traveler, deeply committed to capturing and sharing the mesmerizing beauty our world offers.

A graduate of the esteemed Savannah College of Art and Design, and currently based in Atlanta, Georgia, Brittany has embarked on a personal project intertwining her love for creation, connection with people and nature, and her insatiable desire for exploration. Through large panoramic formats and the clever use of mirrors, she provides a unique and insightful visual commentary on life, deviating from stereotypical landscape panoramas to seize the viewer’s attention and elicit more than a mere glance. Her work, steeped in underlying anxiety birthed during the pandemic, reflects not just physical landscapes but also the emotional and mental landscape of an artist in continuous reflection and discovery.

In college, one photo class required us to complete 50 artist researches in 8 weeks. I had stumbled upon one who would take singular small, maybe 12-inch, mirrors and place them in spots with zero context, reflecting something extremely contrasting in color and texture. One I remember distinctly was a circle in what looked like sand reflecting blue sky and clouds. This intrigued me so incredibly that I wanted to do something similar with my final project; however, I wanted my photos to at least have context in the surrounding landscapes the mirrors were in. After completing this, I did the same thing in my film and darkroom class.

2024 Krappy Kamera® Competition

 2024 Krappy Kamera® Competition

Soho Photo Gallery is pleased to announce the 26th International Krappy Kamera Competition. The gallery is located in lower Manhattan and is New York City’s longest running co-operative photography gallery. All selected photographs will be exhibited at the Gallery as well as on our website. The opening reception is Thursday, March 7 from 6 to 8 pm.

What is a Krappy Kamera

Our philosophy at Soho Photo Gallery is that in the hands of any artist great photographs can be made with basic equipment. To explore this talent, we are searching for extraordinary photographs made with lousy lenses. Examples of some Krappy Kameras are the Holga, Diana, Ansco, and pinhole cameras. You can also create your own Krappy Kamera by using your non-Krappy Kamera (e.g. 4×5, SRL, DSLR) and exchanging the lens with a Krappy lens (e.g.pinhole body cap or Holga-type lens). Cell phones, disposables and point and shoot cameras are ineligible. No AI generated work is allowed.. Remember, just because a camera is old and moldy doesn’t make it Krappy. The lens is the determining factor.

She regularly teaches workshops, is a frequent reviewer, and has curated and juried many exhibitions for galleries and festivals across the country. Traces. PhotoPlace Gallery call for entry

 Traces

PhotoPlace Gallery

Even the most mundane human activity leaves evidence of its existence. Old shopping lists, a lost stuffed animal left on the swing set, fragments of an old wedding dress, all speak of the passage of time. Larger human activities leave boarded-up storefronts and crumbling infrastructure. No matter the scale, they all leave a nostalgic hint of an irretrievable past and, ultimately, of our mortality.

For this exhibition, we seek images that hint of humans come and gone by the traces left behind.

We are very pleased that Jeff Curto will be the juror Traces. He will select up to 35 images for exhibition in our Middlebury, Vermont gallery and another 40 images for our Online Gallery. All 75 images will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog and remain permanently on our website, with links to photographer’s URL.

To further reward excellence, we are offering a $500 award to the Juror’s Award recipient, and $250 to the Director’s Award recipient.

Family Photos: Memory, Identity & Artifact.Call for entry

Prospectus

Family Photos: Memory, Identity & Artifact. Praxis Gallery seeks photography that unravels the intricate tapestry woven by family dynamics, histories, and emotions encapsulated within conceptually constructed images or seemingly ordinary snapshots.

Visual studies of specific family histories, highlighting unique stories, personal contexts, and broader interpretations that recognize shared human experiences and emotions across diverse family narratives are encouraged. The family photo as concept or artifact may explore specific stories, moments of joy, sorrow, love, and nostalgia, and extend an invitation to viewers to connect with the universal and timeless aspects of familial relationships.

But time can also complicate the family photo. As Roland Barthes stated, “the personal essence captured in a photograph gradually loses its meaning, as the image transforms from a vivid contemporary representation of one's identity to a faded relic of the past”. Diminished significance can be central to the visual study of the family photograph for this theme.

Praxis Gallery seeks photographic works that explore any of these concepts, endeavoring to unravel layers of meaning inherent in family photos. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission. Curated by Praxis Directors.

Call for entry: ‘every nook and cranny’

A nook is more than a place to eat breakfast. A cranny is not just a crack in the ground. Nooks and crannies are defined as “the smaller or less accessible parts of a place or object which are not normally noticed.” To search ‘every nook and cranny’ is to have looked everywhere, even places normally disregarded.

They are everywhere — Nooks are the curves and divots of one’s nose. Crannies are the holes where light shines through. They’re places, movements, people, and feelings. They’re both tangible and metaphorical. They’re in plain sight and they’re microscopic.

How do nooks and crannies manifest in your life? We want to see! Look outside the box (or maybe inside it).

If you plan to submit, we ask that submissions are 3000px on the long side, 300 dpi, CMYK color space, jpg files. Although it is not required, when submitting, please try to provide us with a few words about you and your photo. You may submit up to 3 photos, however, please understand that all of them may not be used. Also, please know that because we are waiving submission fees, contributors to the publication will be asked to purchase their own copy.
