We're offering a Savannah-based on ground GOOD 560 course with Habitat for Humanity and ReStore this Winter 2023 Quarter!
Background
The
multidisciplinary course, GOOD 560 Design for Good, directly supports
the mission of SCAD SERVE, our community service design studio. Focusing
on four critical areas of need — food, clothing, shelter, and
environment — SCAD SERVE empowers the SCAD community to listen to the
needs of its neighbors and local leaders, and create meaningful design
solutions that improve quality of life. Volunteerism, public service,
and social impact are and always have been an integral part of SCAD’s
character. GOOD 560 Design for Good employs our students' collective
brilliance through elevated, design-for-good solutions that make a
difference in our hometowns of Atlanta and Savannah.

Background
Affordable
housing is a national conversation, Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity
and ReStore bring solutions for affordable housing to the local
community. Through a ReStore, donated home goods are resold and funds
from the store help bring the possibility of homeownership to families
throughout the Coastal Empire. Deliverables
The
ReStore is an important source of income to help fund and fuel
home-building projects in the community. Maximizing the sales from the
store and community awareness of the ReStore will increase profits and
increase funds for new home builds. Arranged inside a long-term lease of
a former grocery store, the ReStore is set up in sections within a
large space with limited directional signage or wayfinding and limited
visuals along the shopping spaces. With the help of SCAD SERVE and GOOD
560 students and faculty, the development of a wayfinding and
directional system for the ReStore in addition to creating and
identifying appropriate visuals to adorn the walls and help convey the
“Habitat for Humanity Story”, is anticipated that customers, clients,
and community members will better utilize and understand the importance
of their dollar by purchasing from the ReStore.
- Wayfinding system to optimize the shopping experience through directional improvement and signage
- Visuals to enhance the ReStore space to narrate the story of a shopper’s dollar and improve community awareness of shopping to help others
- Scope out the intended use of the space and provide renderings, NOT for professional use
- Determine the best use of interior and available space, as well as the most economical design decisions
- Production of renderings, design features, and visual schematics to be used in grant proposals and donor relations
Learning and Design Opportunities for Students
Students will:
- Create exciting and comprehensive documentation of current ReStore shopping systems and provide immediate, short-term, and long-term solutions to an ongoing community resource
- Collaborate with political and industry professionals working on the issue of affordable housing locally, nationally, and internationally
- Observe and document the shopping experience, the donation experience, and the volunteer experience of the ReStore and office spaces
- Understand community building and the role of permanent residents to enhance it
- Development of internal and external process and system enhancements with stakeholders
- Gain real-world experience in local policy and industry volunteerism
