Spring 2019 ARTH Elective Course

Course Description
TOPIC: “Savannah’s Hidden Histories: The History and Visual Culture
of Savannah and the Lowcountry”
How does a city tell its stories? Using Savannah as a case study, this course
assesses the impact of public history on a location’s identity and empowers
students to enrich Savannah’s visible historical record. Students examine
how Savannah’s past is typically presented in civic spaces, and consider
whos histories have been neglected or misrepresented. Topics of study
include public art, a chronology of historical Savannah, discussions of race,
class, and gender, urban planning, and the cultural identity of the
Lowcountry region. Students’ research, writing and documentation of local
sites will be applicable to website and mobile site encounters. Class
meetings feature guest presentations by specialists in local history and
include several excursions to experience Savannah’s rich fabric of people
and places.
