DESCRIPTION
RayKo Photo Center will be hosting an exhibition of documentary work in both our main gallery and side gallery. This is an open call for photographic work exploring the genres of street photography, photojournalism and the social documentary. We're looking for powerful visual storytelling about anyone, anywhere and anything. Surprise us.
PRIZES
Best of Show - $500 cash prize plus the winning photographer and photographic essay will be published on ViewFind.com. There are also 4 honorable mention juror awards. All winning images will be exhibited in our San Francisco gallery.
JURORS:  Judy Walgren & Ann Jastrab
JudyWalgren is the Editorial Director for ViewFind, a robust visual storytelling platform. Previously, she was the Director of Photography at the San Francisco Chronicle, where she managed a staff of visual content producers, photo editors and pre-press imagers for print and digital platforms. She has also worked for the Denver Post, The Rocky Mountain News and the Dallas Morning News. Walgren received a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting with a team from the Morning New for their series dealing with violent human rights against women. She received her Masters in Fine Art from the Vermont College of Fine Arts in January 2016. Walgren lives in San Francisco.
Ann Jastrab is the Gallery Director at RayKo Photo Center. The RayKo Gallery offers over 1600 square feet of exhibition space and presents eight to ten shows annually featuring many nationally and internationally recognized artists. Ann regularly participates as a curator, juror, and reviewer for a multitude of organizations: the SF Arts Commission, the Academy of Art in SF, Artspan, SFAI, the Center for Fine Art Photography, the Savannah College of Art and Design, the Seoul International Photography Festival in Korea, Fotofest, Photolucida, GuatePhoto, Review Santa Fe, Review LA, PhotoAlliance (Our World), SPE, Medium, Palm Springs Photo Festival, Filter, Lishui International Photography Festival in China, and Critical Mass. She has also been teaching courses at the Maine Media Workshops (formerly the Maine Photographic Workshops) in Rockport, Maine since 1994.
ENTRY GUIDELINES
Deadline for Submissions:  June 29, 2016
Entry Fee:  $30 (up to 3 images); $5 for each additional image
All entries must be jpegs, not bigger than 3MB, longest side sized to 1280 pixels
Save files with artist's last name, first name, and image title, for example:  Smith_Jane_Pigeons01.jpg
Any work deemed misrepresented by its digital file will be declined
Online submissions accepted only via Lensculture

NOTIFICATION
Notification of juried results will be mailed or emailed on July 3, 2016
SUBMISSION OF ACCEPTED WORK
Accepted artists will be invited to send or deliver actual work.  All work must be framed or mounted with a wire affixed and ready to hang.  NO SAWTOOTH HANGERS.  Entries are handled with great care, however, RayKo assumes no liability for work on its premises.  All selected works must be for sale.  RayKo retains 40% commission on all photographs sold, so price accordingly. Selected images may be used for promotion of the exhibition.

All work must be original. Works previously shown at RayKo are not eligible. The juried exhibition is open to all photographers, national and international.

Best Portfolio 2016 contest

You can submit your portfolio until October 3, 2016

The best portfolio will be exhibited totally free for 2 weeks in Blank Wall Gallery (on both floors)
The artist will be able to present up to 36 photographs.

1. The exhibition will be presented on the Blank Wall Gallery web page as is the case with all the solo exhibitions.
2. Blank Wall Gallery will produce the prints the artist will choose for the exhibition, with a maximum of 36 photographs, in our printing labs, completely free of charge.
3. Newsletter and invitations for the opening night will be sent to all the contacts of the gallery.
4. Personalised Press Release will be sent to magazines so that the exhibition gains exposure.
5. The winner will be awarded a Certificate of achievement by Blank Wall Gallery.
6. A free submission for the next Best Porfolio competition will also be given to the winner.
7. At the end of the exhibition Blank Wall Gallery will create a detailed folder with publications, photographic material from the exhibition, posters and any other material and will send it to the artist.

Two portfolios will receive a certificate of honorable mention and they will be entitled to submit 10 photographs in one of the following group contests of Blank Wall Gallery.
All participants to the Best Portfolio 2016 Contest will have a 25% discount for future prints that will be made at the Blank Wall Gallery lab until the end of 2017.

Calling All Artists! The City of Savannah's Department of Cultural Affairs is now accepting exhibition proposals at the Cultural Arts Gallery for the 2017 calendar year.
All mediums will be considered for a non-degree seeking solo or group exhibitions, including video and installation pieces. Proposals should be professionally presented and should include a cover letter, a resume, an artist statement, a previous exhibition record, 10-12 digital images of the work to be considered, and a self-addressed stamped envelope if the proposal needs to be returned.

Job Description

The Photo Coordinator will work with multiple Photo Editors in the development and production of stories for National Geographic magazine, National Geographic Traveler, and various pages on nationalgeographic.com (e.g. proof.nationalgeographic.com).  The ideal candidate has the demonstrated ability to work independently, make editorial judgments, and problem solve creatively.  Position encompasses both technical and creative tasks.  Creatively, it requires good research, and visual skills.  Technically, it requires the ability to maintain comprehensive databases, knowledge of software related to photography and publishing, and literacy with multimedia, publishing on digital platforms, and social media.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferred.
  • 1 - 3 years experience in editorial development, publishing, or photo production.
  • Some experience with production for digital platforms like web and devices, literacy in multimedia, and/or experience with social media for business.
  • Visual and editorial sensibility to assist the photo editor in developing coverage plans and locating useful photographs and illustrations from outside sources is preferred.
  • Computer literacy required including the Macintosh platform, plus familiarity with Microsoft Word, iView MediaPro / Expression Media 2, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • A quick study on learning other software applications such as FileMaker Pro, Fetch, Media Grid, etc.
  • Ability to speak foreign languages is a plus.

June 30th Deadline for Submissions


Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York is pleased to announce an open call for entries for its Annual National Photography Competition, this year juried by artist Mickalene Thomas.
Photographers and photo-based artists working in any genre are eligible to apply. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a cohesive body of work. "The American Dream," Bin Feng's Thesis Exhibition



Join Bin Feng for an opening reception of The American Dream on Friday, May 27 from 7-10 p.m. at The Welmont Gallery, 1930 Montgomery Street, Savannah Georgia. The photo series continues to explore the idea of the American Dream from an eastern male gaze. Iconic elements such as "the white picket fence" and "the golden retriever dog" are employed to reconstruct the spectacle. Concealed as the relations between classes, the true character is revealed, and a social necessity has been secured in constructing the new spectacle as an illusive representation. By staging the moment of daily life, the artist performs as an actor and jumps between the fiction and reality, which essentially conveys the notion of the history of the man-the locomotive power behind the images, focusing on bicultural shock.

OR GIVE ME DEATH is inspired by revolutionaries including Founding Father Patrick Henry, slave rebellion leader Gabriel Prosser, and NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

May 29th Deadline for Photography Entires to The Rookies



The Rookies is an International Awards for young designers, creators, innovators, and artists. The Awards were created to discover and showcase the outstanding talent emerging from higher education facilities and help launch them into careers at the world’s top studios.

Our legacy is from Visual Effects, Animation, and Next-Gen Gaming having created the CG Student Awards – the largest online Awards for creative students. Established in 2009, 74 paid internships and over $900,000 in prizes has been given away.

Photography Submissions for Oatland Art Review




The Oakland Arts Review (OAR) is an annual journal published through Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The OAR is dedicated to the publication and advancement of literature written by undergraduate students from across the United States and around the world. We publish fiction, poetry, essays, comics, and screenplay excerpts, as well as artwork. Because we believe that undergraduate students have much to contribute to the literary world, it is our mission to provide a platform for this generation’s emerging writers and, in so doing, create a journal that is of both high artistic quality and great literary significance to readers from all backgrounds.

General Guidelines:

The Oakland Arts Review (OAR) seeks high quality literary fiction, poetry, nonfiction, comics, and art submissions for publication. Please read these guidelines carefully and be sure to check the appropriate submissions category for further specifications.

We accept submissions year round!
Please upload your work using ONE FILE (do not upload files as multiple submissions).
Please proofread your work carefully before submitting.
While we do accept simultaneous submissions, we ask that you indicate this in your cover letter and withdraw your submission if it is accepted elsewhere.
While we make every effort to respond in a timely manner, response for submissions averages between 3 - 4 months.
We ask that you wait three months between submissions of the same type.

Eligibility:

Writers and artists must be actively enrolled undergraduate students in a degree granting institution to be considered for publication. Please include the name of your college and your current year (freshman, junior, etc.), as well as any other relevant information, in a brief cover letter.

Photographer(s) Needed! SCAD Savannah to Host 2016 NAIA Women's Golf National Championships



Photography Needs for NAIA Women’s Golf National Championships:

This is the schedule and photography needs for the women’s golf national championships May 16-20 per our agreement with the NAIA.

Monday May 16: This is the practice round at Savannah Quarters from 8:30-3. During the practice round we need to take the team pictures of all the teams competing in the tournament. Last year we set up near the 18th hole so it was close to the clubhouse and near shade. During that time we will also be doing a Champions of Character event at the golf course, which will feature a representative from every team.

Monday May 16: That night is the NAIA women’s golf banquet, the banquet will take place at 7 p.m., at the Embassy Suites in Downtown Savannah off MLK. At the banquet the NAIA will be handing out several awards that we will need to have pictures of. Also, in the event of a rainout during the practice this is the alternative for team pictures.

Tuesday and Wednesday May 17-18: These are the first two rounds of the tournament. The tournament is broken up into two sessions a morning session and an afternoon session, with the teams that play the morning session on Tuesday will play in the afternoon session on Wednesday and vice versa. We need to cover all of the teams at least once during these days. We can either shoot all day Tuesday or split it up and cover just the morning group on both days. The morning session begins at  7:30 a.m. should wrap up around 2.

Thursday May 19: The third round will be reseeded with the better teams playing in the afternoon. I would recommend coming in the afternoon like 12-4 and getting pictures of the teams on the course. This would be a good opportunity to get extra picture of the SCAD players as well.

Friday May 20: The field is cut down so there is only one session in the morning with the teams starting to tee off at 7:30 a.m. The top three teams will be paired together and should to tee off around 9:05. We need to get pictures of the teams that are in contention. I will let the photographer know which teams they are and they’ll be teeing off hole 1. At the conclusion of the final round, we will be having the award presentation and we’ll need to have pictures of all the awards that are handed out. The event should be over around 4:30 p.m. on that Friday.

Like last year we will need to make all the pictures available to be purchased after the event.

SCAD alum Tobia Makover

Nakazora: the space between Sky and Earth

The Jepson Café features Nakazora: the space between Sky and Earth, an installation by Tobia Makover. The Buddhist term Nakazora holds several meanings, including a designation as the place between sky and earth or a celestial zenith. Makover explains that “Nakazora was a term I’ve been familiar with for a long time. It really resonates with me and my process. The idea of immortalizing an individual’s memories and families throughout life, death and and everywhere in between is at the heart of each piece. Though my work is introspective, the emotions and life experiences that I have are universal. With this show I hope to humanize these universal experiences and connect with the viewer’s emotions as they explore the spaces in between.”
The Jepson Café installation acts as a guide along a timeless pathway, encouraging each viewer to stop and look inwardly. A firm believer that an image represents a single note in an ever-expanding symphony, Makover continues to traverse installation. She examines the deeper movement of time and breaking down barriers with a single image. By creating large multi-dimensional installments, she pushes the boundaries of photography and creates a full experience of how the mind explores memories.

Tobia Makover creates two and three dimensional fine art which encompasses photography, encaustic painting and multiple age-old processes, materials and techniques. Internationally acclaimed, Makover has exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Griffin Museum in Boston, AIPAD in New York, and SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah. Her work is also included in the permanent collections of Savannah College of Art and Design and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. Makover received her MFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design and her BA in Sociology and Communications from the American University in Washington, D.C. She is a fulltime artist who lives in Savannah, Georgia with her husband and two children.

Call for Entries: Magnum Photography Awards 2016

LensCulture and legendary photography agency Magnum Photos are joining forces to produce one of the best opportunities for photographers all over the world to be recognized and rewarded for their talent.
2017 marks a significant year for Magnum as they celebrate 70 years since four pioneering photographers toasted the conception of an independent photo agency. This landmark anniversary will be marked by a series of international events, projects and partnerships, with an emphasis on the agency's digital presence and the photography community at large.
Ahead of the anniversary celebrations, Magnum Photos and LensCulture invite you to enter our inaugural Magnum Photography Awards, an international call to discover the best photographers from all over the world. Our distinguished jury will select 12 Winners and 20 Finalists from Documentary, Street, Portrait, Fine Art, Photojournalism and Open categories. In addition, the jury will select 7 photographers as “Jurors’ Picks” and give out 5 “Student Spotlight” awards to young, up-and-coming talents.
Winners, finalists and top-rated photographers will gain access to an unprecedented level of global exposure and recognition from two of the largest organizations in the photo industry, with a combined audience of over 4 million.
