Echo's Reflections

Exhibition opening: Echo’s Reflections
Photographer and  SCAD Master of Fine Art candidate Jamie Hankin will be showing his thesis project, Echo’s Reflections, at the Oglethorpe Gallery in Savannah from February 18th through February 22nd, 2016.
Combining elements of Dutch Vanitas painting, surrealism and cubism, these photographs explore the concept of beauty and the transience of life through a medium which freezes time. Ultimately, this work seeks the redemption of beauty from the purgatory of contemporary critical theory.
Jamie Hankin (b.1960) received a BFA in photography from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 1982 and anticipates receiving an MFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design in May of 2016. A successful long-time commercial photographer, Mr. Hankin is currently Director of Studio Photography for Saks Fifth Avenue. Previously, he has worked for global clients such as J. Crew, Nike, Foot Locker, LL Bean and Macy’s. He has also worked for editorial clients such as Vogue and Interview magazine.
Echo’s Reflections opens at the Oglethorpe Gallery, 406 East Oglethorpe Avenue, Savannah, GA, on Thursday, February 18th. The opening reception is from 5:30 to 8:00pm. For additional gallery hours, please call 518-653-6326.

Fourth Annual New York Portfolio Review

Kirill Kudryavtsev/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images
What does it take to succeed as a photographer? It takes time, passion and obsession to make great work. But you also need the opportunity to get your work seen and celebrated.
That’s why we are again gathering 150 photographers and 75 of the most influential editors, curators, gallerists and book publishers for two days of private photo critiques on April 2 and 3.
Applications are now open for the Fourth Annual New York Portfolio Review, sponsored by the New York Times Lens blog and the City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism. And it’s free — because we think that it should be the quality of the work that matters, not how much money you have.
This will be an opportunity for people in the photographic community to meet, trade ideas, help each other — and have fun.
Saturday, April 2, will be for all photographers 21 and older. Each participant will receive six private critiques. Sunday, April 3, will be solely for photographers 18 to 27 and will consist of at least four private critiques for each participant, as well as workshops on how to best present, promote and publish your photographs. We will screen all applicants and choose 100 participants for Saturday and 50 for Sunday. All kinds of photographic work — from fine art to photojournalism — are encouraged.
Please note: Photographers who attended last year’s review are not eligible to apply this year. Photographers who attended two or three years ago can apply for this year’s review, but they must submit new work and expectations will be higher.
Once photographers are selected, they will submit their top choices of whom they would like to have review their work. We will match participants with as many of those reviewers as possible.
To enter, send no more than 20 photos total, from one or two projects, using the form below. The files should be jpegs, 1200 pixels across and 72 D.P.I. The deadline is Feb. 4 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. We will inform those who are accepted by March 1.
Note: Be sure to triple-check the email address you submit for us to contact you. In the past, people have been accepted into the review, but we couldn’t reach them because of a misspelling in their email address. Please, don’t let that be you.
If you have any questions, you can send us an email.

Profiles of Poverty Exhibit Call for Photography
·       Considerations: The exhibition is open to photographers in Savannah. Photographers working in all mediums and styles are invited to participate. Hosted by St. Vincent de Paul Georgia and Step Up Savannah, this exhibit seeks to capture images of the lives and neighborhoods of Savannah’s low-income working families and those in poverty.

With a poverty rate of 26%, the experiences of families living in Savannah’s poorest neighborhoods are diverse, unique and complex. Therefore, photographers are encouraged to spend time with an individual, family or in a neighborhood to submit meaningful and honest portraits. Each submission should include an accompanying documentary – either recorded or written. The purpose of this call for photography is to reveal the faces and stories of the one in four individuals working daily to make ends meet in a city with tremendous potential. Submissions should aim to give a voice to the 26%.

Submitted images may appear on the St. Vincent de Paul Georgia and Step Up Savannah webpage and continue as an online exhibition that extends beyond the event. SVdP Georgia and Step Up Savannah reserves the right to use submitted images to promote the exhibit and in future marketing materials. Images selected for display will acknowledge the photographer and where and when the photo was taken.

Photography selected by our panel of qualified judges will be displayed at a local studio throughout the month of February. Reception dates will be announced at a later time.

·       Requirements: Applicants may submit a portfolio of a maximum of 10 high-res photos with an image inventory sheet listing the file name, title, and size of printed photograph. Please also include the name of the person featured in the image, the location of each photograph, and provide a brief statement with context for each photo.  Include your contact information in the body of your message.

·       Submission details: Submissions will be accepted through January 30, 2016. Save images to JPEG format, and email entries to mwinkler@svdpgeorgia.org.
·     Name files:  firstname_lastname1.jpg, firstname_lastname2.jpg, etc. For entries of more than five photos (2 MB or less each), please send photos via a file sharing service (e.g. Dropbox, Web Cargo).
• Evaluation Criteria: Photos will be individually evaluated and assessed based on conceptual and technical expertise, emotional impact, memorability, unique perspective and relevance to poverty in Savannah

The purpose of the Profiles of Poverty photography exhibit is to bring a human face and new perspectives to the problem of poverty in our communities. Below is a list of some examples of subject matter that would fit well into the exhibit.

Photo Noir

Juror: Aline Smithson
Deadline for submissions: January 18, 2016
Exhibition prints deadline: February 13, 2016
Gallery exhibition: February 24, 2016 through March 18, 2016
While its birth was in cinema, film noir is a style that lends itself wonderfully to still photography. This call for entries is for any still photograph in the noir style, black and white or color, and any capture method or process.
Film noir is distinguished by a unique aesthetic of low-key, contrasty light, strong shadows, unexpected camera angles, bleak pessimism, and a lurking sense of danger.
As Roger Ebert describes the style: “Locations that reek of the night, of shadows, of alleys, of the back doors of fancy places, of apartment buildings with a high turnover rate, of taxi drivers and bartenders who have seen it all.”
The film noir aesthetic that was nurtured in German expressionism in the early 1900s, and reached its apex in American film making in the 20 years from the late 1930s through the 50s. Classic examples in American film noir include The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, Double Indemnity, Strangers on a Train, The Postman Always Rings Twice, They Drive by Night, and hundreds of other “A” and “B” films of the era.
We are very pleased that Aline Smithson has agreed to jury “Photo Noir”. She will select 35 images for exhibition in the gallery, and another 40 images for exhibition in our online gallery. All 75 will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog.
Submit up to five photographs for $30, $7 for each additional.

Jan. 15, 2016, Reception for Exhibition: 'Port City Review'

SCAD presents an exhibition in conjunction with the January 2016 release of Port City Review, the university’s annual student-juried literary arts journal.
The show features works from 40 student artists whose pieces appear in the journal. All artwork in the exhibition is available for purchase, including photography, painting, fibers and illustration, among other disciplines.
The 2015 edition of the book will debut at a reception for the exhibition on Jan. 15, 2016, and features more than 100 artists. The works represent some of the best artists from all four SCAD locations.
“We had more than 800 artists submit to this year’s Port City Review,” said Dustin Dahlman, the journal’s creative director, who is a senior graphic design major from Grafton, Wisconsin. “Port City Review is unique in that students lead all aspects of the journal’s production, including its judging, design and marketing.”
Port City Review is in its fourth year of production. It has twice won the College Media Association Pinnacle Award, the highest honor in college media. The SCAD Student Media Center oversees the journal.
In 2014 the Port City Review unveiled a digital tablet app that showcases digital works —including motion media, video and sound design pieces — in addition to the journal’s annual print edition. The updated digital version will be available for download in Winter 2016.
For more information, please visit the journal’s website or contact Adam Crisp, SCAD assistant director of student media, at 912.525.5681 or acrisp@scad.edu.
Reception: Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, 6–8 p.m., Alexander Hall Gallery,
668 Indian Street, Savannah, GA
Gallery hours: Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
