Click646 celebration continues to grow
Greenwood’s Click646 photography
celebration returns for a fourth year with a day packed with workshops,
presentations, exhibits and music. This year, Click646 features the addition of
an Ocktoberfest celebration that organizer jon holloway hopes will become an
annual event.
Activities take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Arts Center at
the Federal Building, sundance gallery and Meridian Studios on Maxwell Avenue,
and outside on Oregon Avenue. The event will begin at
8:30 a.m. with coffee at the Arts Center. Following throughout the day will be
workshops, opportunities to meet the keynote speaker, exhibits and
presentations.
Click646 gets its name from 29646, one
of Greenwood’s zip codes. The event is both a celebration of the photograph and
a recognition of the power of the photograph to inspire thought, conversation
and action relating to world issues.
National Geographic photographer Robb Kendrick will
headline this year’s Click646 event with a keynote presentation from 4-6 p.m. at
the Arts Center. Kendrick’s true passion
has become wet-plate photography, a historic photo technique used during the
mid-19th century. The tintype photos made with the wet-plate process are each
one of a kind, as they are all handmade from start to finish. He is also
working in daguerreotype, ultra-large format and combining audio and video with
his tintype imagery. His most recent wet-plate project documents the working
cowboy in 14 Western States, Mexico and Canada for National Geographic. The
photos are collected in a new book “Still: Cowboys at the Start of the 21st
Century.” Another recent book is titled “Changelings,” a collection of Mexican
mummies photographed on tintype. Kendrick's first book of tintypes was “Revealing
Character,” which is also a touring exhibition that is being featured at eight
major museums in the U.S.
Kendrick’s presentation will be preceded by a short
introduction of the South Carolina Rivers Project, “Web of Water,” featuring renowned
South Carolina conservation photographers: jon holloway, Tom Blagden, Ben Keys
and Clay Bolt. This unique project was initiated by holloway
with Upstate Forever with the goal of using fine art photography to
highlight the beauty, fragility and critical importance of the Saluda-Reedy
watershed and Lake Greenwood. The project explores the state of the watershed
from the headwaters of the Saluda and Reedy rivers to their culmination in Lake
Greenwood.
A multimedia show of “Web of Water”
will be displayed during a reception at sundance gallery, from 6-10 p.m. According
to Holloway, an exhibit and fine arts book of the watershed images are planning
for 2013 with all proceeds to benefit efforts of the Saluda-Reedy Watershed Consortium.
Workshops
Renowned Washington D.C. photographer John Harrington will offer two workshops:
“From Speedlight to Strobe Kit – Lighting Solutions for (most) Every
Situation,” from 9-11 a.m. at the Arts Center; and “Negotiating with Clients
and Best Business Practices for Photographers,” from 1-3 p.m. at the Arts
Center. His workshops are made possible by the support of the ASMP Foundation
and the South Carolina Chapter of ASMP.
Professional photographer, master fine
art printer and gallery owner Hal Looney of Brevard, N.C., will offer a fine
art printing presentation from 1-3 p.m. at sundance gallery. Topics will
include: optimizing and preparing images to print; print protocols through
Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop; recommendations for papers, canvas and printers;
and some how-to’s on canvas printing, laminating, and stretching. Participants
will have the opportunity to print a 12-by-18 inch image of their choice
utilizing an Epson Pro Printer. The workshop is sponsored by All Square and
Epson.
Student
exhibit
“Click646
is about sharing the world, creating concern for the environment through the
use of photography, and engaging youth to make a difference,” says holloway. Photography
students and faculty from across the state are encouraged to participate in
Click646’s annual exhibit and competition. An awards ceremony for the exhibit
will be held at 3 p.m. at the Arts Center and a reception will be from 6-10
p.m.
Oktoberfest
A new event for Click646,
Oktoberfest will serve as a festive wrap up of the day’s activities. Beginning
at 6 p.m. on Oregon Avenue, Oktoberfest will feature music, food, beer and
more. The band Red Wanting Blue will be perform, German food will be sold by
local restaurants including Polos, Pascals, R3 and Stumps, and Howard’s will
sell German beer.
