DISTRACTION
A photographic exploration of the medical industry’s use of décor.

Somewhere in the world there must be a store that sells interior design decorations to all 2-star hotels and medical facilities. In a hospital or doctor’s office, these routine decorative elements are primarily intended to help us feel more at home, but does this really work?

Charlotte Shuber explores this subject in her upcoming thesis exhibition: DISTRACTION.

Shuber, an M.F.A. candidate in photography with the Savannah College of Art & Design, presents an unusual, intimate view of medical facilities–their walls, floors and furnishings–and compels the viewer to take a closer look at the environments surrounding suffering. Shuber examines what patients habitually stare at in these situations but perhaps never fully see–décor that is often uninspired and even unintentionally humorous–and yet distracts us from states of pain, fear and anxiety.

The showcase (which features many local medical settings) asks us to consider why we as patients and visitors allow ourselves to be so easily distracted from our suffering by futile decoration. How much should the medical industry invest in ambiance? Is the use of commonplace décor as distraction enough or should the decoration be designed to more positively enhance our (often traumatic) experiences?

Sabrina Simmons

With great sadness we share news of the passing of Sabrina Simmons. Sabrina earned her MFA in Photography from SCAD and went on to use her talents as an educator, journalist, and community activist in Savannah. Sabrina was much loved and respected by her Professors and peers, and she will be  missed and fondly remembered. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

A service to celebrate the life of Sabrina Manganella Simmons will take place at 6 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church, 225 W. President St. A reception will follow.
A gathering of remembrance and celebration will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 700 Christopher St.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Chatham-Savannah Citizen Advocacy, 7 E. Congress St. Savannah, GA 31401, or the charity of your choice. 

Prestigious Graduate Student Fellowship Opportunity

The Department of Education invites applications for Fiscal Year 2011 awards for the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program for graduate study in the social sciences, arts, and humanities.  Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be either entering, or have not yet finished, the first full year in a graduate program leading to the highest terminal degree in their field (for Photography this is MFA).  The department expects to award 33 new fellowships at an estimated average amount of $43,989.  Applications are due by September 30, 2010.

The Camera Club of New York is proud to present Behind the Scenes: New Staff Work at CCNY, curated by Jesse Chan and John Stanley, an exhibition featuring work from emerging photographers dedicated to the fine art photography community. This diverse group, comprised of sixteen staff members, highlights an assortment of subject matter. From Sean Ellingson’s dynamic portrait of a solitary figure, to Garret DeLuca’s pinhole photographs depicting a static and desolate suburban landscape, this exhibition brings together the diverse photographic work of CCNY staff, all of whom are bound by their mutual passion for the unique medium of photography and their participation in the CCNY community.

National Geographic Traveler Magazine, Interns Needed

National Geographic Traveler magazine seeks interns in the Photo/Research/Web departments in Washington, DC. The internships are unpaid and must be done for school credit. This is great experience, and the chances of getting hired are increasing with iPad development.

Photo Intern duties: Photoshop resizing/minor color correction, emailing various photographers//PR firms to track down photographs, stock photo research, creating files in FMP (easy, even if you don't know the program), pulling all the photos for a layout and bringing files to production, and assisting on in-house photo shoots. Organization and efficiency are key!
