is accepting submissions for our 2011/2012 seasons.

Emerging artists (individual or collaborative groups) are encouraged to send proposals for a new project, a new performance, or an exhibition of new work in any medium, which utilizes the gallery's outdoor area, or media room, or gallery B space.

The duration of the show may range from a one night event up to an 8-week exhibition.

Please include:

> a concise written description of the project , one page or less
> a visualization of the project in the space
> Five low-res jpgs of current works
> cv and biography of the artist(s)
> your website(s)

Open Call for Entries for All Photographers; Black & White Photography

“Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.” - Robert Frank

What does "black and white" mean to contemporary photographers in the digital age? When Robert Frank made this observation, black-and-white film and silver prints were photography's most commonly used materials. Nearly a half century later they are approaching "alternative media" status. Or are they? Are the implications and meanings of black and white still central to photography's unique nature as a visual medium?

Submissions to this juried exhibition are limited only by your imagination and your photographic eye. Portraits, fashion, editorial, landscapes, documentary, conceptual - all of these genres, and others not named, are open for consideration.

Prints should take whatever form they need to in order to represent the continuum of gray tones that comprise your photographs. Whether the initial recording was made on film or pixels is immaterial. However, in the final assessment, prints will be judged on their merits. Qualities of form, content, and relation to traditions of black-and-white printing and visualization will be sought in the pool of submissions.

Entry Fee: $35 up to 5 images; $10 each additional (no limit on number that may be submitted)

Prizes: $300 for 1st; $200 for 2nd; $100 for 3rd

Entries Due: July 23, 2010

Notice of Acceptance: August 2, 2010

Exhibition Dates: September 10 - October 25, 2010

Reception: September 10, 2010

About the Juror

George Slade has provided fine photographic artists and their audiences with insightful interpretation and curatorial expertise in exhibitions, classes, writings, lectures, and face-to-face exchanges for over 25 years. Formerly the artistic director of Minnesota Center for Photography (2003-2008) and the director of the McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers Program (1998-2008), George is currently a veteran presence at portfolio review events like Fotofest, Photolucida, Critical Mass, PhotoNOLA, and the Society for Photographic Education's regional and national conferences. In the last two years he juried regional and national exhibitions for the Coalition of Photographic Arts (Milwaukee), "New Directions 2009" at the Wallspace Gallery (Seattle), and IRevelar at the Naomi Silva Gallery in Atlanta.

Art for Art's Sake, by Desotorow

Desotorow Gallery, 2427 De Soto Avenue, is hosting its third annual art auction on May 7 from 6-9 p.m. Desotorow is a volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to the gallery, providing stability for its future.

Desotorow hosts art exhibits, professional development seminars, open critiques, craft and trade shows, and more. This May, Desotorow invites the community to come out and support the gallery as its volunteers prepare to bring another year of unique art exhibitions and events to the city of Savannah.

One for the Row, by Desotorow Gallery

SAVANNAH, Ga. -Desotorow Gallery, 2427 De Soto Avenue, is hosting an invitational exhibition in celebration of its anniversary and in support of its volunteers and artists of 2009. The opening reception is Saturday, April 3, 5-10 p.m. and the exhibit is on display from April 2-7. Desotorow is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization that supports emerging and local artists. “One for the Row” is an opportunity to bring together the community and recognize the gallery’s participants and supporters.
