Magazine Internship in Charleston

Great opportunity for a Photography/Graphic Design double major or major/minor:

Garden and Gun Design/Photo Intern

A Garden&Gun design intern must, above all else, have a can-do attitude. They'll need to come to us poised and already equipped with a design acumen—that will more than make up for what they lack in experience. Our art department thrives on positivity, pleasantness, teamwork and rewards those who seek opportunity. Our design intern cannot be shy nor too brash. They'll need to be good listeners as well as xray visionaries and they'll want to put their craft before Charleston's nightlife. A G&G intern will be expected to work three days a week (minimum 20 hours a week/three months in order to stay involved in our constantly changing environment). Our design interns are expected to produce v-o-l-u-m-e, meaning:
taking one pass at a layout isn't enough. An intern is expected to produce several variations on
each page/section that they are assigned.

Design duties will include:
Front of the book design:
The Editor's Letter
Contributors
Correspondence
Masthead
Marketing and Collateral
(everything from sticker design to internet banner design)
Making PDFs
Flow text


A G&G design intern will also be expect to have a passion for photography.
Design is only one task they'll be expected to tackle, photography is the other.
One cannot become a good designer without a strong photographic base of knowledge.

Photography duties will include:
The photography portion of the internship will be more photo production and research than actual photography. Photo research various sections of the book including Below the Line, Talk of the South, Due South and several others. Photo research entails lots of calling, internet mining, filing both electronically and physically. The reward is access to the editing process and our national stable of photographers. Our intern will learn how photography is selected and how it correlates to and supports the G&G brand. The design intern will work hand-in-hand not only with the art director but the photography director as well.

A G&G intern will work seamlessly between these two disciplines and still beg for more. Scanning, photo shoot organization, managing the G&G image bank library and calling in stock photography are only a few of our interns photography opportunities.

The G&G intern is expected to be a part of planning meetings. They are expected to pay attention to what's going on with the whole of the magazine process (take notes), not just their individual sections.
This is expected so that they can jump in and lend a hand with minimal explanation on other areas of the magazine should those opportunities arise (again, they must be good listeners).

Qualifications:
A firm understanding of Adobe Creative Suite including Bridge, Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator.
Have a design vocabulary.
Must thrive in deadline-driven environs with a pleasant, easy-going attitude.
Must like music.
Must like art.
Must be able to find opportunity during the doldrums when there's seemingly nothing to do.
Must respect their peers, their craft and themselves.


Based on our office and staffing situation, the G&G intern must have their own laptop to bring to the office. We will be able to provide a larger monitor. Also, this position must be unpaid.

Call for Entries - "Show & Tell"

Desotorow Gallery announces a call to artists for “Show & Tell,” a juried exhibition to be held Oct. 23-28, 2009. This call asks artists to explore the use of narrative in a variety of media.

The juried exhibition “Show & Tell” is open to national and international artists of all levels. To be considered, an entry form, entry fee, artist statement and digital images of the narrative art should be submitted to Desotorow Gallery by 5pm, Oct. 9. A $12 submission fee allows for the submission of up to 5 pieces of work. Artists will receive notification of the list of selected pieces through email on Oct. 12.

Editorial/Documentary Job Opportunity

Project: Pearson Carpentry Photo shoot

Pearson Education is working on a new Carpentry book, and needs a photo shoot done for it. The photo shoot location is a housing development being built in Savannah GA. The photo shoot will entail 5-10 visits over the course of several months, starting in October. We need between 150-300 shots taken for the book chronicling the various construction phases, and specific actions taken by the construction workers.

New Public Art Class Fall Quarter

Introducing students to the exciting and competitive field of public art, this unique cross-discipline course teaches participants how to imagine and design works that impact the public, based on content, environment and audience engagement. Students will examine the pertinent issues of this topic through historic and contemporary examples of public works and how they have affected (and will affect in the future) both social and political discourse. Travel between Atlanta and Savannah campuses, a symposium and design charrette are part of this singular format.
