Students produce a complete portfolio based on the chosen topic and present the work to the community in a final exhibition. Through the investigation and visual exploration of a story pertinent to the local or regional community, students are made more aware of the link between photojournalism, the media and culture. PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

"A good photograph is knowing where to stand"
- Ansel Adams

We all have a unique way of looking at things, a singular vision that can be enhanced and polished by our observations of the world around us through our lens. Asked to photograph the same scene, several photographers may see roughly the same gestalt, but there's always one, or the few, mavericks who find a way to pick out details or angles that others don't see or don't regard as
important.

Juror for Personal Perspective is well known photographer and educator Saul Robbins (http://www.saulrobbins.com/). Saul Robbins is interested in the ways people interact within their surroundings and the psychological dynamics of intimacy. His photographs are motivated by observations of human behavior and personal experience, especially those related to loss, unity, failure, and the latent potential residing in traditional photographic materials and personal history. Robbins is best known for his series Initial Intake, which examines the empty chairs of Manhattan-based psychotherapy professionals from their clients' perspective. He has also worked with abstract imagery in his series Chemical Peels. Members of the Darkroom Gallery Meetup Group who attended Robbins' 2013 workshop, Strategies for Photographic Business Success, still talk about the workshop, saying that Robbins' acute observation made for invaluable portfolio reviews. Don't miss this chance to let him see your work.

Where are they now: Monika Merva M.F.A.1998

Zsuzsa P in Rabbit Ears, 2004 ©Monika Merva
Ours magazine recently featured Monika Merva (M.F.A., photography, 1998) and her book "The City of Children," a photographic collection of Hungarian youth. See her website here!Buy the Book!

In celebration of the ongoing LensCulture Portrait Awards 2016, we will be publishing a series of inspiring features on great contemporary portraiture.

One photographer whose portraits I appreciate very much is Monika Merva. What strikes me about her work is the way that people captured by Merva seem to have completely let down their guard. They seem vulnerable to the gaze of the onlooker. Not as if they are unsafe, but as if we already—at first glance—are so comfortable with this person that they are able to open up before our eyes.

Artist’s Statement

When you walk through the gates of the Karolyi Istvan Gyermekkozpont in Fot, Hungary you are pleasantly surprised. Rows of dorm-like homes emerge from behind ancient trees. The land once belonged to the Count whom it is named after. Later, it was seized by the government and turned into a housing facility for children seeking help from their dysfunctional and poverty-stricken families. Gyermekkozpont is its own community.

Having visited the City of Children many times over the years, I have become impressed by its quiet, and often hidden, power and beauty. The community has its distinguishing characteristics, but if you dig deeper, you will find that there exists a direct connection between these surface traits and the universal truths that lie just beneath: truths about human nature and condition we all share.
At first glance you might simply see the people photographed as very different from yourself, but after a longer look, you see the commonality of our life experiences. There is a bond between all people through which we can relate to one another, and it just needs to be recognized. The connection may be the memory of teenaged angst, a feeling of isolation, or the joy of laughing with a great friend.
Since 2002 I have photographed the children in and around their home. I have always been interested in people. As a first-generation American of Hungarian descent, my interest in Gyermekkozpont is personal. I spent my childhood summers in Hungary, speak the language, and have extended family there.
I believe home is where our strength lies. It’s the source of everything, where all our fears, questions, love, and a sense of belonging originate.
—Monika Merva

You Have Nothing to Worry About
Jan. 30 - April 29, 2018
SCAD alumna Melissa Spitz (M.F.A., photography, 2014) records the struggles and complexities of her mother’s life, and their tumultuous relationship, through photography. "You Have Nothing to Worry About" features Spitz’s mother Deborah, who struggles with mental illness and substance abuse, in moments of sorrow, joy, boredom, chaos and pain in an ongoing project spanning eight years of documentation. The artist uncompromisingly confronts viewers with moments typically reserved for private space, revealing an honest and complex depiction of the human spirit.
The exhibition includes works hung salon style to form a narrative that chronicles aspects of Deborah’s life, such as her poolside lounging, her cigarette-burned blanket, bins of pills or a bruised arm. Accompanying this installation, below an image of Deborah in the passenger seat of a car, is a caption of a post from Spitz’s Instagram account, in which she describes the inaccuracy of memory as it pertains to her experiences growing up. As the project has developed over the course of eight years, Instagram has served a vital role, allowing Spitz to explore this relationship publicly and privately. The social media platform has given her a means to test the boundaries of the two, by posting images from the project alongside screenshots of text messages and iPhone images.
Through the progression of "You Have Nothing to Worry About," Spitz has grappled with the ethics of representation and conflicting emotions that she experiences when photographing her subject. Her role as photographer is to document very personal moments in her mother’s life, as well as shed light on taboo subjects like substance abuse and mental illness.
Melissa Spitz is from St. Louis, Missouri, and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. She earned an M.F.A. in photography from SCAD and a B.F.A. from the University of Missouri — Columbia. Spitz's work has been featured by the Aperture Foundation, Time magazine, VICE, The Huffington Post and other publications. She was recently named Time’s Instagram Photographer of the Year for 2017.
"You Have Nothing to Worry About" is curated by Ben Tollefson, assistant curator of SCAD exhibitions.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
This exhibition is part of SCAD deFINE ART 2018, held Feb. 20-23 at university locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, and Hong Kong. SCAD deFINE ART is an annual program of exhibitions, lectures, performances and public events that highlights emerging and established artists and visionaries.

Integrating Our Creative Practice

Integrating Our Creative Practice
Alexander Hall CR-2, Wednesday April 18th at 5:00 pm

A conversation with illustrator Kelsey Wilson, painter Carrie Christian, and photographer Angie Woodard, designed to explore how artists and creative professionals manage to integrate their creative practices into their daily lives.  Is sustaining an artistic practice a creative feat in and of itself? If so, what tools do we have as artists to engage in this pursuit? Join our discussion with the artist panelists to explore these questions. Learn how each artist identifies their challenges, and consider what it means to seek fulfillment while balancing the demands of a creative practice with the demands of daily life.

Kelsey Wilson is pursuing an MFA in Illustration at SCAD. She has experience as a freelancer, practices painting and was hired by James Avery Artisan Jewelry as a designer.

Angie Woodard became one of the first 4 year graduates at SCAD to obtain a BFA in Photography. She has worked in film and television for over 17 years, working on projects such as Resurrection, Army Wives, Walking Dead II, Ben 10, The Jungle Book, and Road Trip.

Carrie Christian studied painting, has a BFA in Illustration from SCAD, and is a successful business owner and entrepreneur. She began teaching in 2009, and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. The Mobile Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum in New Orleans are both home to her work. Carrie was included in the 2007 & 2009 Southern Editions of New American Paintings publication. She is the founder and owner of Scribble Art Studios in Savannah, and in 2017, Carrie partnered with Jen Jenkins to open Henny Penny Art Space & Café. They just celebrated their first year anniversary!
