Magnum Foundation’s Photography and Social Justice Program

Magnum Foundation’s Photography and Social Justice Program expands diversity and creativity in the field of documentary photography through capacity-building and critical explorations of photography and social change.

Each year, the program supports a diverse, international group of Photography and Social Justice Fellows who are passionate about challenging injustice, pursuing social equality, and advancing human rights through photography. With New York City as a cultural resource, the program provides space for interdisciplinary experimentation, mentored project development, and cross-cultural, critical discourse at the intersection of photography and social justice. During the program, Fellows work on projects in their home communities with support from Magnum Foundation’s mentors.
Magnum Foundation covers the cost of travel and room and board for the sessions in New York City. Fellows also receive a modest stipend to support the production of their projects. The program is produced in partnership with the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism.

Celebrating the Creative Process, Any subject, any genre, and any capture or process

Celebrating the Creative Process
Juror: Kat Kiernan
Deadline: Monday, October 16 , 2017
Exhibition prints due November 24, 2017
Gallery exhibition December 6 - December 30, 2017

"I used to say to my students,
Don't take pictures -- make them. This subtle change in language highlights the distinction between the widespread use of cameras in the modern world, and the considered act of creating photographic art. I use "Don't Take Pictures" as a mantra to celebrate photography as a fine art, and to engage as many people as possible with the medium in a thoughtful and articulate way."
Kat Kiernan
For this exhibition, we seek photographs that reflect the photographer's careful and conscious choices in making the image - choices that, among others, are the essence of the creative process and what defines photographic art. Any subject, any genre, and any capture or process are welcome.

SCAD: SMALL WORKS

SCAD invites students, alumni, faculty and staff to submit entries for the annual "Small Works" juried exhibition on view Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, through Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at Gutstein Gallery.

Works must measure 18 inches or less in all directions, including the frame, if applicable. All work must be for sale. Please limit submissions to 12 works by a single artist.

Artwork in all mediums will be accepted. Submit to https://scadexhibitions.submittable.com/submit/89343/small-works-2017

Artists will be notified of acceptance on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017. The SCAD Exhibitions jury may view submissions as they come in, and some artists may receive early notification of acceptance. If an artist's work is accepted, he or she will receive a consignment form and new vendor paperwork via email.

SCAD Exhibitions encourages artists to submit works that will also be included in the fall Open Studio events. If a work sells at Open Studio Night before the "Small Works" exhibit, it is not required to be included in "Small Works."

For questions and comments about the online submission process, email Hillary Eustis at heustis@scad.edu with "Small Works 2017" in the subject line.

People & Winter

Deadline: Thursday October 19, 2017
Winter is a season people either love or hate. There can be some difficult moments as well as some pleasant ones. People have to struggle with the cold and the snow in their everyday life and this can be quite difficult. There are happy moments though. Children playing with the snow, families enjoying a day out, celebrations. Another element that can be quite fascinating during winter is the landscape. Nature looks different covered with snow, but cityscapes are quite impressive as well.
We would be more than happy to see for photographs depicting life during winter; both everyday situations and landscapes

Choices Announced: Until Monday October 23, 2017
Exhibition: Friday November 17 – Thursday November 30, 2017

Art Rise Savannah Announces Local
Artist at Non-Fiction Gallery

Savannah, GA – The Non-Fiction Gallery is pleased to invited you to the Senior Thesis Exhibition of local SCAD artist, Chang Yang. The opening reception will take place on Friday, October 20, 2017  at 5pm, located at 1522 Bull Street. Yang seems to find inspiration in every day people, as he manages to capture the nature of those he encounters.
“My work reflects previous travel experiences that have inevitably surrounded me with strangers. These people are now a subject of my interest,” states Yang. Charcoal is his choice of medium used to depict the impressions left by many. Yang goes on to mention, "I strongly believe that there is an intrinsic beauty contained in every human being, and I attempt to transfer that onto papers." Come out to admire the “charcoal strangers;” the very people that inspired Chang's work. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Complimenting the artist on Saturday, October 21st, 2017; “Schiele,” a New York based chamber music ensemble, will be performing from 6pm-7:30pm. The atmosphere will be filled with pieces featuring Mozart’s “Dissonance,” Quarter No. 19, and Shelley Washington’s folk and jazz-inspired composition. Join us as we celebrate the work of Artist Chang Yang and the featuring ensemble, Schiele. Tickets can be purchased at https://schiele.eventbrite.com for $10.
