Spring 2012 Blue Earth Photo Contest

Blue Earth invites amateur and professional photographers to engage the power of photographic storytelling in our Spring 2012 Blue Earth Photo Contest.

Our work at Blue Earth is based on the belief that a dramatic image can change our perception and alter our understanding of a subject. This idea defines our mission to raise awareness about endangered cultures, threatened environments, and critical social concerns through photography. Blue Earth helps photographers educate the public and motivate society to make positive change - we invite contest entries that exemplify our mission and the power of photographic storytelling.

Entries will be judged by a panel of jurors, all professionals in the photographic field, on the criteria of quality, creativity, and visual narrative. The 1st place winner will receive $500, gear donated by Think Tank Photo, admission to our 2-day, 2012 photo workshop, and inclusion in the Blue Earth "Honors" gallery.

The entry period opened January 1, 2012 and closes at midnight Pacific Time on March 31, 2012. The entry fee is $25 for one photo, $5 per additional photo. Proceeds from this contest benefit Blue Earth's mission and help support our sponsored documentary projects.

Get Published!!!

Hello! My name is Jason Ervin and I am currently the art editor of the Tulane Review. The Review is currently accepting submissions for our upcoming issue. We encourage submissions in basically any form, from photography, to painting to mixed media and everything in between. We are currently working to increase student submissions, and would love to showcase some of the artistic talent SCAD students have to offer in our magazine. Because we generally do not receive nearly as many art submissions as we do poetry and prose submissions, students who submit to the review have a great shot at being published. Interested artists may submit up to five pieces to:

Madness of Photography Symposium

The art history department will welcome a diverse group of talented scholars to SCAD for the fourth biennial symposium. The symposium "Madness of Photography" and the assembled panels promise a vigorous dialogue. The ideas presented will inform discussion in art history courses and across the SCAD curriculum. We look forward to students engaging with current scholarship by attending Fred Gross' book signing on Thursday evening, the keynote by Abelardo Morell on Friday evening, or the two-day symposium. For additional information regarding the schedule please consult www.scad.edu/arthsymposium.

On-line registration remains open until the morning of the symposium on Friday, February 10. Registration will be possible at the SCAD Museum of Art during the symposium. The symposium is open to the public, requires registration, and there is a $15 fee. Fred's book signing and Abelardo Morell's keynote are free and open to the public.

This symposium will examine new perspectives on the many implications of madness in photography's history, theory, and practice. The symposium will explore a wide range of topics: the historiography of the medium, including writings on photography and madness, death, time, or memory; photo-manias; new modes of dissemination; the place of photography in social networking; artists or movements interested in achieving or documenting states of madness; photography's participation in the definition and construction of madness; the medium's connections to scientific and pseudo-scientific fields; and photography and madness outside of the Western tradition. "The Madness of Photography" panels address themes including trauma, poetry, portraiture, memory, and exhibitions. I encourage you to use the symposium and other events as required field trip opportunities.

The symposium will again benefit from amazing experiences outside of the lecture hall, including the exhibition "Room In My Head: Staging Psychological Spaces" curated by Melissa Messina at Gutstein Gallery.

Synopsis
Through the creative process, a reclusive woman overcomes mental stagnation and rediscovers her inner beauty. The story entails a bizarre idea that invades a woman’s mind and gestates into an overwhelming frenzy of thought. Personified by a colony of caterpillars, this force consumes every cerebral barrier, thereby liberating her mind and enabling the birth of a fresh perspective. Thus ensues a surreal metamorphosis…

“Caterpillar” is a cerebral drama, filmed in the historical Wynkoop House, famous for housing George Washington. The crew consists of highly esteemed artists working across a wide spectrum of disciplines. This includes special effects artist, Ben Bornstein (300, The Fighter), visual effects artist Greg Silverman (Black Swan), and editor, Corey Bayes (Haywire, Contagion, The Informant, Che). From storyline through production, Caterpillar is an ode to the creative process. This film is a must-see for anyone who has ever submitted to their imagination and felt transformed by an idea.

CORE Residency Call for Applications

The Core Program awards postgraduate residencies to highly motivated, emerging visual artists and critical writers who have not yet fully developed their practices and share a commitment to critical dialogue.

About the program
Established in 1982 within the Glassell School of Art of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Core artist residencies encourage intensive and innovative studio practice as well as the elaboration of an intellectual framework to understand that practice. In 1998, the Core critical studies residencies were established to provide an opportunity for writers to pursue independent curatorial and writing projects and to promote the discourse necessary for both artists and critics to sustain their practices. Throughout the year, residents engage in ongoing dialogue with each other and with pre-eminent artists, critics, curators, and art historians invited to conduct seminars, lecture, and meet with residents individually.

Program specifics
Each resident receives a stipend, health insurance, and private studio/office space. The residency term is nine months, from September to May. Residents may apply for a second term.
