You may not be aware, but our very own Terri Foote (MFA candidate, Photography) has a secret identity. She is Gnate the Gnat...beloved mascot of the Savannah minor-league baseball team, the Sand Gnats!

The Sand Gnats season kicks off on Friday, April 11 at 7 pm (gates open at 6). First 1000 fans get
magnet schedules and there will be fireworks after the game. Gnate kicks off his 4th season as the most adorable mascot in the world!

Save Polaroid is site (and Flickr page) that is dedicated to collecting signatures, stories, images, homages to Polaroid instant film. The webpage is a response to Polaroid's February announcement that is will end production on its instant films in the upcoming year.

Richard Prince: PoMo Redux

Love him or hate him, Richard Prince has become as much an object of culture as the images he is transmuting by recontextualizing. Spiritual America, which includes some of his most well known "borrowed images" will be on exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum thei spring.

Nobody takes a good idea and makes it his own like Richard Prince, who has carved his place in contemporary art by recycling, reflecting, and reframing the imagery of others. His unique art of appropriation–from biker culture to car culture, comedians to cowboys, pinups to pulp fiction–redefined the creative process for a generation of artists.

Organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Richard Prince: Spiritual America opens next week in galleries 4, 5, and 6. Tickets for the After Hours preview party on Friday, March 21 are still available.

Potato Photo Contest (no joke!)

UN photography competition in praise of the humble spud

The United Nations has launched an international photography contest celebrating the UN Year of the Potato. Photographers are asked to submit images relating to potatoes and potato production to highlight the vegetable's role as a source of food, employment and income in developing countries. The competition is being run by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and Nikon.

Photographers can enter separate professional and amateur categories and submit single digital images or photo stories of four to eight related images, in black-and-white or colour. Participants can submit files by uploading them directly via internet or sending them by normal post on a CD.

The winning photographs will be chosen by a judging panel including Lucy Conticello, Adrian Evans, Steve McCurry, Maria Wood and Francesco Zizola. Winners in the professional and amateur categories will be awarded cash prizes of up to £2000. The deadline for entries is 01 September.

Watershed: A Survey of The French Broad Watershed

SPE National Denver: Graduate Student Presentation by Jeff Rich.
The French Broad River in Western North Carolina is the third oldest river in the world, behind only the Nile and the New River in Virginia. It is even older than the Appalachian Mountains that surround it.
This work documents the uses of the French Broad River floodplain, its development and the constant change brought on by man's presence and natural causes. By looking at the river itself and the landscape of industry and inhabitation, this project emphasizes the need for responsible stewardship of the land to ensure its sustainable future.

Seeking a summer intern, start and end dates are completely
flexible. Responsibilities will include assisting on shoots,
production, retouching, billing, preparing promotions, and general
studio work. In general it's an opportunity to be involved in all
aspects with a busy NYC photo studio. Ideally candidates will have a
basic understanding of digital photography and studio lighting.
Photoshop skills are a plus. However an eagerness to learn and a
positive attitude is what I'm looking for.

New York Photo Festival Call for Entries

A new international, annual competition launched during the New York Photo Festival, the New York Photo Awards, will honor talented photographers from all over the world whose exceptional work breaks new grounds visually, intellectually and aesthetically. The Awards will give those visual artists the opportunity to reach key decision makers in the photographic community and the editorial, fine art and fashion worlds. Submissions will be accepted starting February 1, 2008 through April 14, 2008. The Awards will be announced in May during the inaugural edition of the festival.

John Engstom Talk

On Tuesday, March 11th, John Engstrom will speak at the O House Ballroom at 7pm.
Engstrom has worked as a photo assistant in NYC, and for the past 10 years has served as iconic photographer, David LaChapelle's first assistant. He also owns and operates a digital tech company, Scheimpflug, and recently purchased RGH Lighting in NYC.
