Student Roundtable Review - USC, February 11-12

Jennifer Schwartz Gallery, Fraction Magazine and University of South Carolina are pleased to announce the Student Roundtable Review, to be held February 11-12, 2012 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
The Roundtable Review is an opportunity for fine art photographers to present their portfolio to a panel of three reviewers at one time. This format allows for more dialog and problem solving about the work, as each reviewer brings a different perspective and different ideas.
The Student Roundtable Review is open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Sessions are available for twenty photographers, and sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant will have a 30-minute session with the three panelists and receive feedback on their work.
At the end of the two-day event, participants will socialize and network with the panelists and fellow reviewees at an evening reception at the University. The wrap-up party gives participants an opportunity to continue conversations from their review, as well as show and share their portfolios with the other reviewees.

2012 - Young Emerging Artist Competition

CALL FOR ENTRIES

New approaches to concept and form are the life-blood of art. Young artists frequently lead the way unfettered by expectations. But a major hurdle for any artist starting out is getting their work into major urban art centers. The Phoenix Gallery, located in Chelsea, New York, is sponsoring an Emerging Artist Program to provide a venue for young artists to present their work in this context. Two Artists will be selected by jury and will be given a solo exhibition and a one-year membership to the Phoenix Gallery during the 2012 season.

Postmark Deadline: February 25

Exhibition dates will be April 25- May 19, 2012 or Sept. 5- Sept. 29, 2012

Eligibility

Open to artists working in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, mixed media or video

Selection will be made from CD or DVD only.

Electronic Media Submission requirements:

On a DVD submit a segment no longer than three minutes, but also include entire video in a separate file.

On a CD submit one image each of ten artworks made in the last two years, 5 of which should be available for solo show at the gallery. (For 3D pieces you may include one detail image per work.)

1. Label the CD with artist's name, phone number and email address.

2. Format: JPEG only; maximum image resolution 150 dpi (dots per inch); no single image should exceed 5 MB (megabytes)

3. Save each image as name of artist and number of work (e.g. Lastname1.jpg, Lastname2.jpg, Lastname2detail.jpg, Lastname3.jpg)

4. Note: Do not submit PowerPoint or PDF slide shows, flash files, web sites, etc. Please use only one CD for all images

5. Include the following with CD:

Printed list detailing name of jpeg file, title, medium, size, date completed.

Liability and Sales

Phoenix Gallery assumes no responsibility for loss or damage. Submission of work for this exhibit constitutes agreement with all terms and conditions stated above. The gallery charges 25% commission on sales made as a result of the exhibition.

Removal of Work

All work will be return-shipped the day after the exhibition closes. The gallery is unable to store artwork.

Adjunct professor of photography, Meryl Truett is featured in an exhibition at the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA entitled Local Color: Photography in the South November 12, 2011 - January 29, 2012 She will also participate in a panel discussion with Dave Anderson, William Greiner, Birney Imes and the closing reception on January 26.

Additional Exhibitions: Meryl Truett is also featured in the Telfair Museum/Jepson Center's new exhibition, Fresh Focus: Contemporary Photography from the Permanent Collection, until July 8, 2012. Since the dawn of the twenty-first century, Telfair Museums has greatly expanded its holdings in photography, adding nearly 300 photographs to its permanent collection. About ACP:
Since 1998, Atlanta Celebrates Photography has supported Atlanta’s emergence as an international center for photography. Through an annual October festival and year-round programs, ACP seeks to nurture and support photographers, educate and engage audiences, promote diverse photography venues, and enrich Atlanta’s cultural scene. The acclaimed ACP Public Art program, an integral component of the annual ACP festival in October, has featured temporary projects in a variety of diverse locations throughout Atlanta. It is significant in its ability to reach beyond the audience of traditional art venues and for its ability to expand the way its audience considers and perceives photography and “lens-based” media. Eligibility:
Any artist as an individual or team may apply, provided that the person(s) or firm who will be responsible for the actual fabrication and/or construction of the piece(s) have had previous experience in the medium(s) proposed, which must be disclosed in detail in the application form.

Entry Fee:
None

Media:
No media restrictions have been established in order to ensure maximum creativity for participating artists. However, since ACP is an organization that promotes all things photographic, it is a requirement that your project involve lens-based or photographic media as an integral part of the piece (this includes images and/or video captured by a lens, or media in which light sensitivity is a primary element of the material, or reimagining the uses of photography, or possibilities of imagery made with light). We encourage you to think widely and to explore this concept without restraint. Please keep in mind the “Selection Criteria” listed below. Projects that rely heavily on complex or untested technologies or complex audience participation are discouraged – usually, the simpler the better. ** After you click "Apply", please take a look at the "View Site Details" portion of this call for entries for a document outlining the variety of projects we have commissioned in the past **

Budget:
$ 9,000 has been allocated. The budget is all-inclusive, covering design, construction and/or fabrication, transportation, delivery, site preparation, lighting (if applicable), insurance, consultant fees, installation and de-installation at the conclusion of the project. Artist’s travel (if applicable) and all other costs associated with the project (including Artist’s fee) are included in this amount. If the proposed budget exceeds $ 9,000, your application must detail how the overage will be funded.

Site & Duration:
Applicants may propose sites, but should be aware that it is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain permission and access from the proper authorities. Artist should initiate the obtaining of permission during the application process if possible. Note that ACP can assist the artist in securing an appropriate site(s) for the project if assistance is needed. Consideration should also be given to security, view accessibility, and ambient light issues of a proposed site. ACP would like the project to begin in late September/early October 2012 and be on exhibition throughout the month of October, but will consider other time durations as they relate to specific projects. The artist should plan to remove the project early November, 2012.

The Society for Photographic Education will host their annual national conference in San Francisco, March 22-25, 2012. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate and one $500 will be awarded to a graduate student to support student travel to this WONDERFUL event.

Eligibility limited to current, full-time undergraduate and graduate SCAD photography majors.

Award of $500 must be used for SPE Conference travel, conference fees, hotel etc… for the 2012 National SPE, (Society for Photographic Education), Conference in San Francisco.

LightBox Photographic Gallery in Astoria welcomes submissions for The Photographic Nude 2012. This is a juried exhibit exploring the artistic and creative view of the body and it’s form. How you got your start: After graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design, I worked as studio manager for Joyce Tenneson. I gained access to a free shooting space on the weekends at the Polaroid studio in Soho which allowed me to build my portfolio and my professional career launched from there. However, in a way I consider every moment my "start" because there are always new challenges.

Best gig so far: At 24, I landed an international advertising campaign for Pioneer Electronics via the agency TBWA/Chiat/Day LA. If there was ever a time that I thought I "made it,” that was it.

What's next: I'm currently finishing post production for my breakout film, "Caterpillar." It's a cerebral thriller/drama with some influence from directors such as David Cronenberg and Darren Aronofsky. Making a film has been the most creatively fulfilling experience of my life. It's encompassed every aspect of my artistic training- creative writing, drawing storyboards, sculpting props, photography, music, etc. I have heard it said that if Leonardo da Vinci were alive today, he would be a filmmaker, and I believe it.

In Memoriam: Jan Groover, Fine-Art Photographer, 68

Jan Groover, whose complex still life tableaux earned her comparisons to Paul Cezanne, died January 1, the Janet Borden Inc. gallery in New York, reports. She was 68. The cause of death was not announced.

Born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1943, she studied painting at the Pratt Institute and received her MFA from Ohio University. She began taking photographs in the late Sixties, and abandoned painting in favor of photography in the 1970s, at a time when William Eggleston and other artists were pioneering the use of color photography. After shooting 35mm street photos in New York, Groover began exploring still-life photography. She would assemble humble kitchen utensils, food and household objects and, using a 4x5 camera, transform them into an array of patterns, shapes and colors. Curator and critic Susan Kismaric said of Groover’s still lifes, “Houseplants, knives, forks, and spoons appear larger than life. Our common understanding of the meaning of these pedestrian objects is transformed to a perception of them as exotic and mysterious.” Writing in The New York Times, critic Andy Grundberg noted that a gallery show of Groover’s still lifes caused “a sensation” in 1978. “When one appeared on the cover of Artforum magazine, it was a signal that photography had arrived in the art world - complete with a marketplace to support it."

Her experimentation continued, as she moved to shooting black and white and producing platinum palladium prints. Her work was included in the Whitney Biennial in 1981. Groover had a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1987, the year photographer Tina Barney produced a documentary about Groover titled “Tilting at Space.” She taught at the State University of New York at Purchase for many years until the early Nineties, when she and her husband, artist and writer Bruce Boice, moved to Montpon-Menesterol, France.

Her books include Jan Groover, published in 1976, and the 1983 Jan Groover: Photographs, with an introduction by John Szarkowski, curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art. Her work was exhibited at George Eastman House, the International Center of Photography, the Cleveland Museum of Art and other museums around the world. She received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Boice.

Calling all documentary photographers! Blue Earth's submission deadline for the next round of reviews is only two weeks away: January 20th, 2012.

Please note: our guidelines have recently been updated. The January 20th deadline is the only currently scheduled call for submissions in 2012.

Blue Earth sponsors photographic projects whose goal is to educate the public about endangered cultures, threatened environments, and important social issues. We are primarily interested in work that is educational and informational in nature and will consider proposals of any geographic scope involving the photographic medium. Our standard agreement sponsors a project for two years.

Blue Earth offers fiscal accountability to the projects we accept for sponsorship. As a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status, Blue Earth is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions from private foundations, individuals, or other entities. Along with this fiscal accountability, we also offer other services. When you join our community of photographers, we offer mentorship throughout the life of your project sponsorship, publicity on our blog and newsletters, help with PR and marketing, and more depending upon individual needs.

Work with a group of young, passionate artists and curators at the Wassaic Project, a vibrant multidisciplinary arts organization in Wassaic, NY and New York City. Programming and Exhibition interns learn about aspects of curating and producing an art exhibition and arts and music festival, from curating, press, marketing, event planning, exhibition hanging, gallery management and more. Because the Wassaic Project is a small, young organization, interns have a unique opportunity to contribute to the long-term identity of the organization and take on substantial responsibility. Interns have the chance to manage their own projects and will work on the Summer Festival application process, curation, promotion and installation, and will help manage our Artist Residency program and events. Interns will work directly with artists as well as the directors of the Wassaic Project.
Internships will be tailored to meet your particular interests and take advantage of your skills, from writing, to silk screening, to carpentry and installation, to anything else. Interns must be passionate about the Wassaic Project's mission, have an interest in contemporary art, be detail- oriented, communicate well, and be able to climb lots of stairs.
Wassaic is about 90 miles North of NYC and is accessible by car and by Metro North (train goes direct to Wassaic).

Rachel Browne (M.A. 2008) is looking for a second shooter to assist with weddings in Georgia and South Carolina. Some wedding/event experience is required, and a candid/photojournalistic style is a plus. You must have a car and be able to drive to locations as far as Atlanta, Columbia, or Myrtle Beach. You will be reimbursed for mileage. No post-production is required, you will just need to provide RAW files at the end of each event. Rate is based on experience. About this project

We Are Historians...

Aint-Bad Magazine is a quarterly photographic art journal focusing on images that explores human existence, culture, and contemporary issues.

Aint-Bad was created in March of 2011 by five SCAD photography students (Taylor Curry, James Jackman, Caroline McElhinny, Caitlin Moore and Carson Sanders) who are passionate about supporting work made by emerging photographers. In our minds, photography is man’s best tool for documentation, we are interested in photographic works that have a voice and reach beyond the surface of the photograph.

We love printed matter and you should too! It is important for us to remain as a print magazine. We are interested in the dialog that is created between the viewer and the magazine held in hand. There is an undeniable difference between looking at a printed image and looking at a photograph in the form of pixels on a screen. A magazine is personal and intimate. Each page is like the walls of a gallery, carefully planned and curated, an opportunity to reflect upon the conversation of visual language. Our magazine is an affordable way to look at photographs they way that they were intended, in print.

The previous issues have been funded by our five editors. For this next issue we would like to print an edition of 500. We need your help to support and expand this vision and to bring to a wider audience the images, issues and commentary of some of today's best emerging photographers.

Our first issue, released June 2011, We Are Here, was a bit of a play on words. It meant that Aint-Bad Magazine had arrived but also that the issue focused on the point to which humanity has come. This issue sold out of its edition of 100.

This project will only be funded if at least $3,000 is pledged by Thursday Feb 2, 3:17pm EST.

Otherwise a little-known town off I-95, Midway, Georgia comes alive in Tobia Makover’s upcoming aptly-titled show, Midway, running November 17-22 at the Oglethorpe Gallery.

A renowned local artist, Makover will exhibit never-before-seen multimedia photo encaustics that center around this small Georgia town, rich with Civil War and Civil Rights history.

Midway is an autobiographical, coming of age show that juxtaposes the death of Makover's father with the birth of her children.

The encaustic photographs – encased in a combination of wax, resin, and varnish –embody a deep Southern community with a fading story.

The black and white images capture a history rich with sometimes-blurred sentiments of good and evil.

“The physical past is endangered… dying even. And with it, much beauty,” explains Makover. “For my own life perspective, life confronts death.

My father’s generation passes away as a new generation is birthed. The future is forming, the present deteriorates, and the past struggles to survive.”

The show is curated and presented by Susan Laney of Laney Contemporary, former Director of the Jack Leigh Gallery.

Oglethorpe Gallery is located at 406 East Oglethorpe Avenue near the corner of Habersham Street.

The 27th Annual Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition – Call for Entries

Johnson City - The Positive/Negative is an annual juried exhibition of contemporary art organized by ETSU Slocumb Galleries under the Department of Art & Design. On its 27th year, the exhibition shall focus on the theme “Material Transformation.” Up to $1,500.00 in awards including Best of Show cash prize and possible solo exhibitions. Open to all media and US-based artists, 18 years and older. Deadline for submission of entries is December 19, 2011.

This year’s Juror is Dr. Gail Levin, art historian and biographer. She has taught twentieth-century art, American Studies and Women’s Studies at the Baruch College and Graduate School at City University of New York (CUNY). She was former curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art and has curated international exhibitions for the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Gallery. Dr. Levin has written extensively about Edward Hopper, twentieth-century American art, women’s art, Judy Chicago and her most recent publication is a biography about Lee Krasner. Her essays have been published internationally, and she has written reviews for the New York Times, American Art Review, Asian Art News (Hong Kong), The Los Angeles Times, Art Research (Japan), Journal of Modern Jewish Studies (UK), Women’s Art Journal, BolaffiArte (Italy), Jong Holland (the Netherlands), Arte y Parte (Spain), Archives of American Art Journal, and the Smithsonian Magazine to name a few.

SCAD Grad Student Jessica Little Wins Grant for Covenant House Georgia;

Atlanta photo studio, Raftermen to Host Fundraising Event to Benefit CHGA this

Atlanta, GA - Sappi Fine Paper North America announced in September 2010 that SCAD-Atlanta graduate student, and Creative Director at Youth Photo Project, Jessica Little, had been awarded a grant from Sappi’s 11th Ideas that Matter — an annual, innovative grant program that transforms the creative ideas of designers into a powerful force for social good. The grant was used to fund a youth photography program within Covenant House, a shelter and ministry for homeless youth, and provided 40 Holga camera kits to residents in Atlanta and New York earlier this year. The photographic work of over 40 homeless youth, that are or were Covenant House residents over the last year, will be available for your donation this Saturday, Novmber 19 th in the Atlanta studio space of Raftermen, Inc., located at 256 Walker Street. SW, in Casleberry Hill, Atlanta, GA.

The event, and all proceeds raised by the youth's photographs will benefit and honor Covenant House Georgia & New York during the month of November, which is the National Homeless Youth Awareness Month.

Since its inception, the program has funded more than 170 campaigns in North America, and awarded more than $7 million in grants worldwide. The grants will be used to develop campaigns for non-profit organizations backing social, cultural, health, and human rights efforts, and environmental conservation work.

Through Ideas that Matter, each designer’s project supports the work of a nonprofit organization of their choosing. Reviewed by a panel of judges working in graphic design from across the United States, this year’s Ideas that Matter projects represent a broad spectrum of causes and were selected based on their creativity, potential impact to the target audience and practicality of the implementation plan. Jessica Little was one of 27 designers from throughout North America who were selected to receive a grant through this competitive design competition. Since 1999, Sappi’s Ideas that Matter program has awarded over $10 million worldwide in grants to designers around the globe, who are performing pro bono work for a nonprofit organization. The socio-political movement „Anti-Consumerism“ attracts more and more followers. At its heart it is a movement against the equating of personal happiness with consumption and the purchase of material possessions. Fueled by the current economic situation, activists occupy Wall Street, a young casual trader is able to lure BBC into a fake interview where he states, “I go to bed every night, I dream of another recession…. Its an opportunity to make money.” and forums for “creative critiques on consumerism" gain followers rapidly. All this happens in a world where some artists are able to create artworks that are instantly sold for euro amounts up to 7 digits.

How do young artists take on the social challenges of Anti-Consumerism in their works?

We are dedicating a special feature to the hot topic of Anti-Consumerism. The artist contest is purposely being launched during the biggest shopping months before the holidays.

We call out to all artists to participate in our Anti-Consumerism art contest.

What we expect from you

Think about the current shape of our society as a consequence of consumerism, about price wars to get the cheapest possible product, about advertising selling us the dreams that can only be attained by spending money, about the recent excesses in the financial and business worlds and about the billions of taxpayers money that is spent to clean up the mess when it all goes wrong. We also suggest that you ponder the hysteria generated by celebrity football players, pop and movie stars, as well as art stars.

Submit whatever artform you please: it can be photos, T-Shirts, Oil on canvas, collages, stencils, prints, or graffiti … this is an open contest with no pre judgments or category limits.  If you are 18 years or older, you are welcome to participate. No diploma necessary – only your own creativity!

Face a professional jury as well as the public

There will be two winners of our contest, selected by two different juries:

A jury of professionals will select one winner in the standard procedure. The well known street artists ALIAS and PROST themselves will be part of the jury.
Our Facebook fans and our members will choose the other winner: they will vote for the best artwork in our voting gallery. A simple “like” will decide who will be able to present his or her art for two months at www.ArtCollectorsClub.org.
We will announce both winners everywhere: in our blog, in our newsletter, on Facebook and with our media partners. Most importantly though, ArtCollectorsClub will feature the winners in an online event including an indepth artist’s presentation and the option to offer their artworks for sale online.

SAVANNAH, Georgia - The Savannah College of Art and Design and the Southeast Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society will present "IT'S A SCAD, MAD, MAD, MAD Weekend," a special weekend celebration of the enduring influence of MAD Magazine's cartoonists from Nov. 11-13 at locations throughout SCAD in Savannah, Georgia.

Highlighting this conference will be "A SCAD, MAD, MAD, MAD Discussion," a panel discussion with some of the original artists from MAD on Nov. 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St., Savannah, Georgia. This panel will be free and open to the public.

"SCAD and the sequential art department are both honored and excited about the historical significance of hosting MAD Magazine artists with the National Cartoonist Society, Southeastern Chapter," said SCAD sequential art chair Anthony Fisher. "This is truly a unique opportunity for students to meet and learn form master artists who have contributed to the advancements in the art form of sequential art and defined cultural satire for nearly 60 years."

Self-dubbed "The Usual Gang of Idiots," the legendary cartoonists expected to appear on the panel include:

Jack Davis. Davis was one of the original cartoonists for MAD in 1952. He illustrated the very first story in the very first issue of MAD.
Al Jaffee. With his first piece in 1955, Savannah-born Jaffee is MAD's longest-running freelance contributor. He is best known for creating one of the magazine's trademark features, the MAD fold-in. Every issue since April of 1964 has featured a Jaffee fold-in.
Paul Coker, Jr. Coker has been a contributor to MAD since 1962 and has appeared in over 300 issues.
Nick Meglin. Meglin is a former editor of MAD Magazine, a position he held for over thirty years.
'Duck' Edwing. Edwing began his career with MAD in 1961 and wrote "Spy vs. Spy" for about 12 years, along with his own feature, "Tales from the Duckside."
Sergio Aragones. Aragones has been at MAD since 1963. He distinguished himself with his "Marginal Thinking" strips, which were printed up, down, across, and around the corners of comic panels to fill in the margins.
Sam Viviano. Viviano began his MAD career as a freelance artist and while still illustrating articles also currently serves as MAD's art director.
Tom Richmond. Richmond has been a regular contributor to the magazine since 2000

MAD was created in 1952 by the brilliant artist and writer Harvey Kurtzman and maverick publisher William M. Gaines. The magazine quickly became known for its satirical look at all aspects of life and popular culture, politics, entertainment, and public figures. It's been called revolutionary, subversive, surreal, hilarious, and a total waste of time. (The latter by its own editors).

A Career Development Workshop for Studio Artists
Presented by Michael Aurbach, Professor of Art, Vanderbilt University

The workshop is designed to give MFA candidates in studio art a working knowledge of how to prepare their first search for a college-level teaching position. Even though the job market is tough, there is hope when a candidate has done proper research about the positions. Among the key topics to be covered are: CV construction, researching individual institutions, putting the application package together, and how to handle the CAA conference and interviews. Aurbach has unpublished and hard-to-find data that give a better picture of the marketplace.

Professor Aurbach earned his MFA from Southern Methodist University. He teaches sculpture and drawing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville TN. He is a past president of the College Art Association (2002-2004), the world’s largest organization of visual arts professionals, and he has lectured at more than 200 colleges, museums, and art institutions.

The movie is a short documentary I directed called "Jerry." It's about a man named Jerry Givens who was the chief Executioner on Virginia's Death Row for 17 years. He executed over 60 inmates, but is now an outspoken opponent of the Death Penalty. The movie will be showing at the Virginia Film Festival tomorrow, and then at the Cucalorus festival in NC the following weekend.

The exhibition will take place at Artspace Gallery Miami. Twenty five selected images by iPhoneographers will be presented at The First Annual iPhoneography Miami Exhibition on Friday, January 20, 2012.

1. Deadline for submission: December 1, 2011 No Exceptions
Notifications by December 15, 2011.

2. Entry fee: $20 for 3 images

3. Presentation and Sales: All prints will be for sale for $250 including the frame (provided by the gallery).
The prints will be reproduced using our Epson 9900 Professional Printer, printed on archival 100% Rag Cotton Fiber Hahnemuhle German Etching Paper.
Artspace Gallery Miami is partnered with PrintsGicleeShop.Com, the prints will be reproduced within our facility meeting the highest standards possible.
Each print will be framed, matted and mounted with museum archival materials.

4. Commission: If the artist’s print sells the artist will receive 70% commision and the gallery will retain 30% commission.
If the print does not sell, the print will be returned to the artist.

5. Selection Process: There will be four jurists for this show. They will be viewing each image individually without knowing the name of the artist.
Therefore, a blind selection process.
Initial images for jurying can be sent at medium resolution – please keep in mind that if you are selected you will be asked to send the highest resolution image possible.
Each image submitted needs to be identified with artist’s name, and image name or number.

Jurors will seek to award work that demonstrates the most innovative, unique, and freshest uses of digital technologies.

THE FREESTYLE CRYSTAL APPLE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING
ACHIEVEMENT IN BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Freestyle Crystal Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement in Black and White Photography is generously sponsored by Freestyle Photographic Supplies. Freestyle's goal in offering this award is to provide greater support for students working in traditional black and white silver imaging and alternative processes. One student will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize. The sponsoring faculty member will be presented with an engraved crystal apple. SPE provides a 2012 national conference fee waiver, and a one-year membership to SPE for both faculty and student. Please note: sponsoring faculty must teach at the institution where the student is currently enrolled. All light-sensitive processes, including alternative processes (Van Dyke brown, platinum, albumen, gum bichromate, cyanotype, kallitype, salt, liquid emulsion, lith printing, hand coloring, bromoil, modern day tintype, etc.) are eligible for this award as long as the end product is a gelatin silver or handmade alternative process print. No digital prints accepted.

Jenny Kuhla presents "Sontag's Stencil": Faculty SECAC "Dress Rehearsals" Tomorrow, Friday 10/21

If you're free tomorrow at 1 pm, SCAD Photography Professor, Jenny Kuhla, will be presenting her paper "Sontag's Stencil" in Rm. 109, Arnold Hall. She will discuss the privileged relationship that photographs have with reality, and the importance of Sontag's "stencil" metaphor--her assertion that photographs are "stenciled off of the real."

SCAD is hosting "An Evening with Design*Sponge" on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Arnold Hall. Grace Bonney is the founder and writer for this HUGELY popular web site and will do a lecture, Q&A with the audience, then sign books at a reception. She's looking for a photographer who can take images of the event that she can post to her blog (which gets more than 300,000 unique visitors each month). While she doesn't have a budget to pay the photographer, this could be a nice way for a student or young alum to continue building their portfolio, and Grace would give the photographer full credit for images on her web site, meaning their work would be seen by a huge audience. Attached is more info on Grace and the book she's promoting through the event.

Location: Daegu, Korea

The Department of Video & Animation in the College of Arts at Keimyung University invites applicants for a renewable 2-year non-tenure track faculty position (with possibility of tenure-track upon review later). Preference will be given to Candidates who can speak Chinese as well as English.

Keimyung University, founded in 1954 to provide Christian higher education, is a well-established academic institution in Daegu, Korea. Keimyung University proudly leads the globalization of the region, raising future international leaders and experts who can contribute to the world peace and welfare. (Keimyung University faculty come from various backgrounds and does not discriminate against other religious beliefs).

Required Qualifications

Candidates should have an earned Master’s degree in Video, Animation or Interactive Design which is related with all area of basic design (Digital Art, Digital Media, Graphic Design, Motion Graphic, Typography, Illustration and so on). Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching; an ability to collaborate with department and university faculty members; a commitment to supervising and advising students; and culturally open-minded to multicultural environment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have primary responsibilities including teaching undergraduate courses, advising students, and serving on faculty committees.

We are looking for between 5-10 of your best photographers to shoot events/people at the Savannah Book Festival between Feb 15 - 19, 2012. The Festival people would probably want to contact them even sooner.

It's a good festival, and getting better every year. This year's headliner is Stephen King - possibly the world's most famous author. Others are Walter Isaacson (respected biographer of Ben Franklin, Albert Einstein, and soon, Steve Jobs) , Brad Thor, Bobbie Anne Mason, Toure, Stewart O'Nan, Karl Marlantes, and Charles Faudree.

Patterson / Malghan : New Photography, Hong Kong

Photography MFA students Mike Patterson and Ajay Malghan are having an exhibition in Hong Kong that will run from now until November 5. It is called Patterson / Malghan : New Photography and features three different bodies of work. Mike's work involves a new process in which he records digital video, converts it into still frames, and then uses statistical analysis to layer the frames in order to visualize motion trails over time. Ajay is showing two bodies of work, one which is camera-less and was made by putting thin slices of different foods directly into the color enlarger to create intricate and colorful abstractions that show food in a whole new way. His other work consists of night time long exposures of air traffic outside of various airports in major cities.

The show is at Saffron Gallery, located at 102 Stanley Plaza, Stanley, Hong Kong.
There will be an opening reception tonight, October 14, from 6:30 to 10:00. If you are in Hong Kong before November 5, be sure to check it out!

Our personal possessions reveal our character and provide us with tangible markers of our memories. The photographs from the series Trace (noun and verb) are an exploration of my own memories and biography. I have photographed my own possessions, both mundane and memorable and those of my family members. These objects possess a history and contribute to the telling of the story of my life and the lives of those closest to me. In the private, interior spaces within which these material possessions are held, our most intimate facts, fictions and secrets are commemorated.

PHOT 312 - Architectural Photography: Human-altered Landscapes

This course explores the unique aesthetic and technical challenges of photographing the human-altered landscape. This will be a project driven course focusing on contemporary photographic interpretations of the built environment. Lecture topics, demonstrations and readings will explore the practices of landscape, architectural and documentary photography. Collaborative projects will be encouraged. Students may work with any lens-based medium and/or camera format they wish.

Prerequisite(s): PHOT 113. This course may be substituted for Photo 319.

I met with an alum Eduardo Angel this summer. He said one of his regrets after school was not learning more about web design because there are no reasonable people out there to help with web design for businesses. The web people are non existent, really expensive, or unreliable. It is a viable way to make a living.
